What's up fellas, hope everyone is having a good Good Friday. My 98 gst (my second dsm, first turbo) had been lightly smoking white smoke, had low boost and loss if power. Everything else seemed fine so I figured it was the turbo. So my dad, who has been a mechanic all his life but is not too familiar with turbos, and removed it. There was hardly any play in the blades. But the pipe connecting to the intercooler was oily, there was also a broken gasket from then o2 housing. We had planned on rebuilding it for now. Now I'm not an expert so I was wondering if I could get some feedback/advice/enlightenment about my turbos and turbos in general. Here are some pics of what we found on the t25

Truthfully even if you wanted to rebuild the T-25 it's not worth the cost. I'm sure Justin will elaborate, but with the cost and time to rebuild you could find a nice working one for much cheaper.

This would also be a GREAT time to swap out to a 14b or 16g if you like. If you don't plan on doing fuel upgrades and tuning anytime soon I'd do the 14b swap. The kit is simple and easy to do especially now that you got the turbo off the car.

A good used 14b can typically be found around 75-125 dollars (Just depends I usually find them for 75ish). A 16g depending on the turbo can go from 250 to 350 typically used.

The 16g you'd really want is the Evo 3 16g, the small 16g and big 16g aren't bad but the Evo is a ####ing beast.

Forgot to add this, but I've actually seen used T-25s go for 25 bucks because people had 3 or 4 they have been trying to get rid of for years. The sad part is I know a few people with several sitting in their garage.

If you don't want to upgrade other things, such as fuel supporting mods, I would stick to a 14b or t25 for now. Get used to it for a while and read, read, read! Get to know your car in it's stock form before you do any upgrades.

Look up Turbo Lab under our free lance vender section on this forum. Dudes name is Ian and he works some wonders with MHI turbos.

Hey man, i moved from Texas so, {that has nothing to do with anything}
i mother #$%^ing hate the t-25 :notgood:it did same thing as yours and it bleed my block dry so my rod seized to the crank!!! Not good.:banghead:
so with any smoke always keep an eye on your oil. cant trust stock oil gauge.
i recommend you get a new turbo, skip the probability of a faulty "used" turbo and get a piece of mind, you can do great with a 14b, But lets be realistic no real dsm'r is ever content with all stock when our cars are meant to do so much more.:p

16G best choice. But you can slap anything on there, as long as you don't raise boost "assuming you stay stock" you will be fine.. But consider,this bigger sexier turbo will just be the step prior you can take when upgrading your engine management;should you choose that route.:rocks:

Update: I rebuilt the t25 with a fifty dollar kit and the car stopped smoking. The reason I rebuilt it and didnt upgrade quite yet was cause the cars got a few other issues I have to fix first but I will upgrade soon
