Okay so heres the deal: I snapped a rod and I plan on getting my shortblock rebuilt at a shop a couple miles away. My dsm was at a garage and we had agreed on $1200 for a mechanic to pull out the engine and remove the shortblock. Since I'm at school, I guess the mechanic misunderstood and pulled out the entire engine and its sitting in my garage at home. I called the mechanic and he said I could drive the engine back or I could pull off the shortblock myself and he'll charge me $500-600 less. I am somewhat car-savy but I've really never worked on an engine besides bolt-ons. Any suggestions on what I should do?

It isn't very hard to pull a motor apart and it is probably a good educational experience.

For $500 I think you would be crazy to take it back to him.

Your other option is to take the whole motor to the machine shop that is rebuilding it and have them take it apart (and put it back together) for less than the mechanic is asking.

Get an engine stand and just tear it down. There is no black magic, just nuts and bolts. I had no experience and was able to do it myself.

Tear it down yourself. I put all the nuts and bolts in labeled zip-loc bags so I don't loose fasteners. Go one part at a time and go slow. The last thing you want is to put it back together and be missing/have extra fasteners.

A shortblock is just the block with rods, pistons, crank but no head. A long block is a full engine. I don't get why you would pay a mechanic 1.2k to pull out the engine. If you're that filthy rich, give me $600 and I'll pull the head off for you. By the way, to access the shortblock you would need to take out the whole engine anyway. So I don't see anything wrong in what he did. Read these.

I'm lost here. You can't remove the shortblock without pulling the entire engine. . .

I wanted him to pull the engine and remove the shortblock... he only pulled out the engine. My dad didn't know my plans for fixing my car so my mechanic called him and he picked up the engine and drove it home

It was going to be 1200 to pull the engine, take off the shortblock, and put everything back together afterwards.

Man i feel bad for you. I got a buddy that works on Lambos, Ferarri's, ect. all day long and he does some of my engine work for me and hes super cheap. He installed my afc controller, pulled my blown 7 bolt out, replaced it with a 6 bolt, new clutch and flywheel, and complete timing job for less than $1000.

I think you still don't understand.
The engine is the shortblock. Did you mean remove the head? You can't "remove the shortblock" from an engine (all you'd have left is the head), but you can remove it from the vehicle.

Tim summed it up quite well for you:

Sounds to me like your mechanic did exactly what you asked him to.
