Miami, Florida
I'm posting this on behalf of someone who lives in West Palm Beach, Florida that I met at a DSM meet in Miami yesterday. He is not a member here but will be signing up soon.

This guy is in DESPERATE need of a competent and honest shop/mechanic with specific expertise on DSMs and hopefully located in the West Palm Beach, Florida area. A possible alternative is the Broward County or even the Miami are but thats not too practical due to where he lives. Can anyone recommend someone?

More on the dude's situation - and its not a pretty one:

The guy has a 2G GST convertible that - according to the owner - had been bone stock and had run perfectly previously until:

About 6 months ago he bought alot of aggressive bolts on - huge turbo, intake, SAFC (not connected properly), something he called "E manage"? AEM fuel rail, pressure regulator but no gauge, etc.

Perhaps not the best choices of parts for a newbie upgrade path and the car owner is not at all knowledgeable about general auto mechanics or DSMs. When I say "not at all knowledgeable" I mean truly not at all.

The guy was "taken" by an incompetent shop (I don't know the name) that basically butchered the car and botched alot in the course of the installs which they did all at once over about a week he says. The shop basically put all his stuff in, gave him the car back saying all it needed was to be tuned - HA! A bunch of us at the meet yesterday looked at the car and agreed it was a total mess.

The shop is giving him the run around and even of they cooperate, by what I saw I'd not trust them to do anything more as it will likely be made even worse.

The car owner obviously made alot of mistakes here and now he needs to try (if possible) to get the car right. Add to the mix its his DD, his budget is tight etc. Not a pretty situation, and I think its possible the engine may have now already suffered catastrophic damage. Its borderline if the thing is worth saving (exterior and interior in pretty rough shape too).

The car is running terrible. Idle at 4,000K + overheating, oil leaks, many sensors unplugged and vaccum lines totally disconnected or missing, bad misfiring, etc. etc. etc. A local tuning shop in Miami he took it too made a minor attempt to address it but gave up as there are major issues and said they can't take on that job with so many underlying issues making the car un-tuneable at present.

I felt genuinely sorry for the guy and the situation he's in - although he has some of the blame himself in maybe not doing his homework ahead of time on many fronts. Whats done is done and now the best he can do is try to fix it. I did tell him if he can find someone willing/able to take this on he needs to understand it will not be cheap or be a quick fix. So if anyone knows a competent, honest shop in the West Palm Beach area that I can point him to please chime in here or call him directly. The guy's name is Michael 786-370-1193.

In all honesty, I have never seen a DSM in such rough shape. Ever. The car looks like it's literary about to explode any second. Also the fact that the starter went completely out at the same time added a bit more to the flame on the problems that the car was having.

To my best knowledge, the car mods wise had,
-(Very Large Turbo) -I don't exactly know what it was. Def wasn't in 50 trim. Wasn't a 16,18, or 20G.
-SMIM
-Huge cromed out Blow Off Valve (which seemed to bring the RPM a bit when you covered the opening).
-AFPR (no gauge)
-AEM Fuel Rail
-Greddy EManage (had super SAFC before but removed it)
-Some performance Exhaust Manifold
-And more

As Seavee says. Car turns on, sits for about 3 seconds and violently revs itself to about 4-5k for idle. While driving, the car is a back fire/pop corn machine. During the cruise we had yesterday with fellow DSM's, all I heard was nothing but back firing from the car. The car from 2-4.5k sputters really bad but after that it pulls really hard according to a friend that went driving with him.

Car leaks oil, and a lot of coolant. If I was him, I'd start reverting parks back to stock little by little and see if it helps anything.

Last recomendaton for him would be to take it to the Mechanic in Orlando that knows quite a bit on DSMs (after a local compression/leak down test to see if its even worth rescuing the engine) and see if he is up to the task and try to re-do whatever was not done right. Could even be things that he's missing with all the bolt ons he just slapped on. Orlando is a lot closer then it is from Miami. So if it was possibly for him, I'd defiantly do it.

Either way, Michael if your reading this I wish you the best of luck in trying to get her running right. You have my number if you have any specific problems that I can help with. Make sure you get her running right ASAP.

Yeah Chris the car is in tough shape.

I talked to Michael last night and told him the immediate short term problem was solving the coolant leak which looked like it was mostly just replacing the coolant fill cap AND the housing the cap sits on (both easy and relatively cheap). Aside from all the many other issues, the overheating is going to quickly kill the engine, and it might have already done catastrophic damage....

Told him to do a compression check and basically has to make a determination of the scope of the problems and cost estimate(s) before spending significantly more $$ on it. If there is already major internal damage the car may not be worth saving and maybe he's better off getting a new clean one and cannibalizing parts off the old - but this time done right by someone who knows what they are doing.

I KNOW Jose C. in Orlando has the technical capability of doing this (or basically anything on a DSM). He has however a regular full time job (not as a mechanic) and is limited to side work ocassionally in evenings and weekends. Michael's car will need time and money to fix. If he could swing it financially and Jose was even willing to take it on, I'd get a rental for a month, tow the car up to him and let him take care of it there.

there is a shop in broward that the owner use to specialize in dsm and neons and is now one of the most reputable srt4 shop in the united states

sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know of a good machine shop that has experience on DSMs?

I know a guy but he is in Orlando..if you guys are willing to take your cars to Orlando I am sure he could help you guys out. He currently owns 2 Starions and an Evo X

I used to live in W. Palm and it is difficult to find a place to trust. I've spoken to a shop that's on Dixie Hwy 1 block south of Southern Blvd, that seems to know what they are doing. Not sure of the cost though, they put a code scanner on my car and didn't charge me anything. Also there is a guy that works at Greater Yamaha WPB in the parts dept--he may not still work there with the economy and all--but I believe his name was Chris. He owns an evo and has had a few DSM's and has offered to do work on my Car, so your friend may want to contact him (Negotiate a fair price before any works done).

Hope that helps.

Ok now I've never actually used them but have heard good things from a few friends about this place. They are called Speed Injected and located at 315 Ansin Blvd Hallandale, FL 33009 #s are 954-214-7481 and 954-454-9697. They specialize in DSMs and even have a Dynojet on site and are gettin a AWD system soon. I hope this helps him cause I've had trouble finding a DSM shop anywhere in South FL. I do all my work myself so I only use a good local machine shop. If he needs help I am currently unemployed :D. Always willin to help fellow DSMers. P.S. called but no answer and left him a message, no call back yet.

Speed Injected is the only local shop that specialize in 1st & 2nd gen DSM's. Invisiblejon, I read your post dated 2yrs ago about 'High RPM Problem'. Not sure what & why you were having problems, but general statements like the one above implies a lot of negative things & that's not the case. I'm curious what turned out to be the problem?

Yes we have a 2wd Dyno & going AWD soon. I run my business out of that location & help out with things for Speed Injected as well. There are many reliable high hp cars that come out of the shop.

Hope the owner this post was started for got his car sorted out, if not feel free to give me a call, my name is Garfield & my # is 954-404-0733 Monday - Friday 10am-7pm.

I had a crank polished by a machine shop just off Alt A1A and Northlake. They seemed very knowledgable, did good work, and it appeared that most of the local dealers were using them for all types of engine machining. I think it was Lake Park Auto Machine. They came highly recommended to me by a MOPAR friend.

I would like to know one too, the place that I went to for my head I wouldn't recommend, they kept me waiting way too long and were very rude!

They are Russ Auto Parts & Machine Shop in Hollywood. All my friends recommended me to them, they did a good job the first time. But this second time with my head they gave me so many problems. It seemed as if they rushed the job as well, they sprayed it with cheap paint, and didn't even install the cams...

Never will go there again.
