ok, put in a ground crank, rebuilt motor by the book, ran for five minutes and ican hear a rod knock, so i shut her down.. WHAT DO I DO? I AM SO PISSED RIGHT NOW. ANY HELP IS APRECIATED! thanks.

yes, it had oil in it. im so pissed right now, and tired. i'll reply back tomorrow.

I would start out with making sure you got oil pressure. Are you sure you lined up all your oil passages with the new bearings? Did clean and blow out any oil passages for any dabber from machining? Also are you sure its rod knock and not like some lifters clatter that is sometimes common on first starter up on a rebuild.

First you've got to relax or you'll really mess something up. Then get some sleep and leave the engine till tomorrow. You need to fight the urge to rip it all apart as fast as you can and fix what ever it is and get back up together were you left off and make up the lost time. I get the same way when I mess something up but all you end you doing is making things worse. Then you'll really lose it.

Just remember everything is going to come apart much easer and the hole process will take half the time the second time through. You never know, wile your in there you may find something else that you missed and save yourself a nightmare.

If this is your first rebuild; nothing makes better studying that doing something more that once. Hay, you could do it three or four time before you done. Then you'll be a pro. Not with my car; But you could still call your self a pro if you want. :)

Let us know what the problem was though once you find it.

My first rebuild got rod knock the second we took it off the dyno. Turned out the guy who built it didn't clearance the rod bearings.

Did you use plastiguage to make sure the clearances were witin spec. Just because a machinist says he ground it .010 or just because a rod bearing was packaged in an oversized dosen't mean someone didn't mess up somewhere. Also did you prime your oil system before you got the engine running?

I primed the oil pump, but i didn't plastigage the clearances, because they were the bearings that came with the crank. any ideas where to start off first, and should i buy another reground crank, i believe it ran me $150 - 180. right now i am thinking of just buying a used motor and dropping in it, but i already have the new oil pump, water pump, bs removal and all that.

i am positive it is rod knock, i've heard this sound before. at first i thought something was loose and vibrating then it got increasingly loud, and i hit the gas and it got louder, so, rod knock. it held good oil pressure. Im working on a 7 bolt, turbo 4g63t

I wouldnt jump to that conclusion yet. Do you still have your balance shafts in?

He posted up a few that he did the elimination kit. How did you prime the oil pump? Did you buy a new oil pump? Did you wash and clean out all the oil passages so all the metal shavings and dirt and grime came out? There is alot of prep work involved in a rebuild, you can't just buy parts, have a machinist do whatever he's got to do, then slap it together and expect that it will last. Cleaning out all the whole motor is one step, also checking and double checking all your clearances is another. I measure each part's clearance and write it down, then double check it just to make sure. I know its time consuming but it sure beats having a motor that is down because i didn't do something right. Go get some sleep, rest up, and calmly look the motor over tomorrow. You never know, it could just be a noisy lifter that has not gotten enough oil yet. Let us know.

ripped the motor out last night, only took 3 hours.. ripped it apart today, and yes, it was a rod bearing... I am just gonna get a crank and rods. where is the best place to get these for a 7 bolt. also, there was water in my oil... i'm guessing since i reused the head bolts twice, and they were used how many times before that, they are stretched. I ordered head bolts from a few places and they keep sending me the wrong ones. the ones i have are the ones that take a 12 mm-12 point socket. the ones they send me take an allen head, and are bigger. any ideas where to get a crank and rods for a good price, I checked advace auto and they don't list rods in their computer, thanks.

Well, how much are you looking to spend??? I would check out some of the vendors, such as Slowbiy and JNZ Tuning. And as far as rod bolts, i'd definatly go with ARP hardware. Most vendors sell them, and i've seen them on eBay for around $90. Can't go wrong with the added insurance. And while you are at it, i'd also buy a mtl headgasket, instead of the factory-style one. You're gonna be spending some money, but in the long end, you will have a reliable car that is tons of fun.
