okay so i want to try to rebuild my 5spd fwd transmission. ever since i had my car the transmission has been making a humming sound in all gears. at first i didn't care much but its just annoying now:banghead:. are there any rebuild kits for the 2g fwd trans? and would i need any special tools to pull it all apart?

also why do you guys think my transmission is humming? i have oil in it and other then the noise the car drives fine. pulls hard, shifts at redline no grinds.

And while i have it apart i was thinking about welding the diff. bad idea?
thanks DSMTUNERS

It is most likely the bearings in the transmission. You will just have to pull it apart and check the clearances. I don't usually recommend a full rebuild, it can get rather pricey, just pull the end cover and check the input and intermediate shafts for end clearance and if they are out of spec check the bearings. You can also check all the teeth on the differential and the roller bearings on each side of it. There are really no special tools. Just basic socket set. There will be a bigger socket needed for the end nuts, and a punch needed to drive out the roll pins. If you need to replace any bearings than you will need to press them off the shafts. The races in the case can be a pain to remove also.

thanks for the info. i really do appreciate it :thumb:

Probably a bad bearing on one of the internal tranny shafts.

awesome info man thanks!:thumb: ill read it all and try to get what they are saying when I'm not so sleepy :hellyeah:

Put in an LSD while your at it? :)

i was thinking that or welding the diff?? what kind of problems would i have while I'm turning??

oh yeah the main reason i want to try a rebuild is because i want to learn. i could easily find one near me for <200. but what would i learn then? and if i fail i can just get a used tranny near me LOL.

I have a 5 spd AWD and have never messed with transmissions before until this past winter. I had a crack in my bellhousing so I replaced it. In the mean time I printed out every diagram I could find on it and taped it to the wall in front of my work bench. I took everything apart and inspected everything and learned how everything works and replaced what needed replaced. Its not really all that hard just take your time. Mine is shifting better than ever now

sweet idea man:hellyeah:. and I'm glad to hear it worked out for you :D.
well i don't know how soon i can tare into this thing because I'm a BROKE ass college student LOL. but when i have the funds i will most defiantly take that transmission apart.:hellyeah: Thanks for the advise :)

dont forget to also check and possibly replace the throw-out bearing, it can cause a slight humm noise. mine tends to when putting into reverse and sometimes first.

Figured i add, theres a great tear down procedure at the vfaq. Also jacks transmissions offers some good kit options for rebuilds

Great reading along with the links. I have one sitting in the garage I want to tear into just because I haven't and want to learn. I've done boat drives, engines, auto trannies but not a manual. I'm with you Alex! Get the hands dirty.
The kit doesn't look bad considering the brands. The price I'm not sure of. I thought about tearing into mine and getting the bearing numbers then just taking them to a bearing shop. It might be alot cheaper that way.
