This is a multiple part question so lets give the background...
Wife is driving my car back from WI and suddenly she loses power and costs to the side of the road. She said every idiot light came on and suddenly the engine was smoking. It's been towed to a mechanic that a friend says is reliable. So now I'm sitting in Missouri with my car in northern Illinois. We seem to think the engine is completely gone. I'm having it diagnosed. Zero mods on the car and it's a 97 Auto GSX with 135000 miles. This is my baby and I was waiting for it to be paid off completely before I started modding it. So the questions are this:
1. If the engine is toast, should I rebuild the engine and have all parts shipped to the mechanic (which I'm not sure I can trust to do the work properly) or should I just purchase an engine and have it shipped?
2. If I do rebuild, what's the best course? I was not planning on doing anything for at least 6 months and then after that, just spending an average of $200/month for the next 3 years to build it up... Now my wonderful wife told me I can spend about 10k on repairing and getting it ready for a reliable daily driver. So what should I do?
This is what I want:
a. I want to autocross this. I don't need as much HP as possible since I'm wanting about 350 to 400 HP to the wheel.
b. Complete tear down and rebuild or crate motor
(If crate, should I go with a stroker for the low end torque?)
The rest of the mods that I would want to do would require a part by part examination so I'm not including that. Needless to say, when I'm done, it'll have an upgraded turbo, new fuel management and delivery,
So what should I do with a blank slate, and a blown motor? This must be a daily driver.
