Hello community, I am about to start cleaning the parts and do a total engine rebuild I just bought my last part I needed. I am wanting some concerns on doing the engine rebuild or watchouts or pointers on doing the engine rebuild things to watch out for. I know how to put it together but I just want to make sure I do the process properly. Theirs a lot to these cars and some mistakes are almost hard to catch. The guy that had my car before me did a rebuild and had the J and E pistons in the wrong spots. Any advise or just things to watchout for would be great. Please dont comment on here unless your totally positive on a procedure or common trouble shoot.
:)

Totally positive what are your goals, a stock car, the manual does a great job step by step instructions.

Youll need to be more specific with what to look for, non turbo, i machine block, head, new parts if your car is staying stock a simple rebuild. Get all the parts that are in questionable shape.

This should help you out;

I also recommend that you always get the head decked.

Don't put yourself on a time schedule. It will take as long as it takes. Otherwise trying to rush through it will normally cause failures.

How did he put the JE in the wrong spots?

Why did you pull the engine? what failed?

if you do not know general machine work, read this, It was written by DSM Wiseman BigWoo

what are your plans/goals for the car?

best thing to do is clean, then clean some more...

has the head been checked for warp?

Has the head been surfaced? If so , how? what head gasket are you going to use?

if mls.... this was done for a 4G63, but the procedure is the same for a 420A

Do you know how much was milled from the head?
Here again written for a 4G63, but the 420A woll be measured the same way]
420A new head thickness 5.411-5.419 with a min thickness of 5.400

also so you can calculate your real static compression ratio, you will need to

and

all this is part of blueprinting your engine build.

Besides what was said I suggest baggin and taggin all your bolts. This goes double if you have people helping you. When I did my first rebuild on a 420a my lower ball joint didn't get a nut on it... that new half shaft only lasted a few miles... Now that I am on my fifth rebuild having seperate zip-lock bags for seperate items is awesome. Also like Mark said "take your time."

+1 on the labeled baggies of bolts/parts. I also use bins/ tubs for larger parts.

Label all your electrical connections (engine/harness sides) vacuum lines, coolant, and oil lines.

I'm not sure what your timing belt situation will be like, but the 4g63's have 2 bolts through the oil pan which are shorter then ALL the rest. If you screw this up the belt will get eaten. Which lead to 2 good pieces of advice....

Even if you have the manual (which doesn't tell you about these 2 bolts...) pay attention to specially sized bolts which are different from the rest, AND make notes of these as you go along.

Good luck with everything.

Hey guys, I really do thank you guys on this post. This has been probably the most informative support I have ever got. As for goals a road warrior summer car that will see some track time. It wont be a DD but I will have ac and power steering. I will drive it on special occations going out to eat or bowling you know fun stuff like that. As for the head it was already put together by the machine shop I go to. On the Je pistons it has the location markings on which cylinder and even the connecting rods have them. If you put them in the wrong spots youll cause the obvious problems but you will also cause more friction will reduce hp and high end rpm. As for the story the guy blew a head gasket I decided to pull out the engine and do a whole rebuild because the head was in pieces.

As long as the notch, dot or arrow points to the front of the engine, and the PTW clearance is in spec, it dosnt matter what hole the piston is slipped into.

So rod #1 can go in cylinder #4 and rod #3 in cylinder #1, ect with no ill effects.

The rods may have been swapped around to gain proper rod bearing to carank clearance.

There may nave been a diffreance of .0002 or some where around there.

my bad bro I meant the eagle connecting rods he had were mixed up he used the bottom of the connecting rod on different rods.

He mixed up the rod caps? no good! have the big ends checked for specs before you install them.

Lucky the engine even ran, most the time one will lock up the bottom end or the other would knock.

Do a complete rebuild from the bottom up. I have a friend that just finished his and i also just today met a guy that ran 30psi with a t3/t4 turbo 50 trim and ran that for about 4 month till the motor blew so it can handle more then you think.

guys just take a look at the profile I am on the top ten most modifications for the 42oa engine on here. I am doing a complete rebuild no doubt. as for the head the machine shop put that together for me.
