Just wanted to show some things I was working on since the car has been down. Thanks to some reading on this site I got ideas to make a new 3" downpipe, and thanks to bullettdsm I decided to also go with a 1/2 radiator from a civic. I am not a great welder so bear with me, this is just for anyone who may want to go a similar route. I am also waiting for my intake mani from Mike at AMM!

Here is the picture of the mock up... I needed to bend it this way because I am still using hahn's manifold (not the star)

I"ll take some better pictures, but it clears up a lot more room and I was trying to keep the downpipe heat away from the radiator as much as possible... I've had a lot of issues with overheating in the past. It also reroutes my radiator hose a to get it away from the downpipe. I'm going to throw on two 10"push fans to help out with the cooling too.

very nice! i too have been haveing some over heating problems! its funny that you mention getting your radiator hose away from the heat, because my uper radiator hose has been heatsoaking and becomeing soft. ive had to replace it alot. i might look into this as a solution!

Lol my cousin said the same thing... gotta change that tank. The welds were real dirty-looking before I cleaned it up. Luckily it did fit the first time.

Just felt like sharing a few more pics of the progress... Yeah it's damn messy still. Just waiting for my intake manifold to complete the setup. Decided to run a jumper battery post to the engine bay. Hope everything continues to go smoothly. I have a 10" push fan in front of the condenser and I plan to get one more 8" pull fan to go on the oil cooler.

Always badass to see some home grown ideas at work . I keep telling myself I want to learn how to weld but I never have anything big enough that makes me want to learn and no time to mess around. Looks good though and most def saved you a nice chunk of change.

UPDATE:: Due to the high temps over here it seems that the doctor was right and the half radiator mod is not going to work out...

What lead me to the conclusion was the following:

- Tried a 50/50 mix of propylene and water, water temps were overheating...
- Went with an 80/20 water/propylene, water temps still overheating...
- Bottle of water wetter w/ 80/20 water/propylene, water temps still overheating (but a little better)...
- Extended the radiator hose/piping about 5 inches further away from the turbo and o2 housing to prevent heat soak. Switched out the propylene coolant for a full ethylene mix (60 oz.) w/ water wetter and topped off with water... car still overheating (and this was at night).

I decided to go ahead and order a Koyo (53mm core) civic full radiator and hope that will fix everything. I will keep everyone posted on the results. I will still continue to run a ethylene/water mix.

Also, I went the route of the Koyo 53mm civic full radiator because,

- Fluidyne's core is only 38mm, Moshimoto 40mm
-Koyo does not make a 53mm for our cars
-The turbo Koyo radiator's lower nipple is too far towards the passenger side and the routing of the hose would interfere with my oil cooler.
- I wanted to get the biggest core and eliminate any doubt of getting a radiator with too small of a core...

I will take pictures once it arrives!

SHould have got a visteon. MAperformance is having a sale for 200 shipped for a slim aluminum core with slim fan already attached would have fit perfect and you would have had no problems with overheating using regualr 50/50.

I want to make my own custom downpipe too. My current one is a POS... had a friend weld a bead to fix a crack, it's rusty, all one long peice which is a major PITA to remove without taking anything else off, tiny flex section (probably the cause of the crack)... plus I want the wastegate dump recirculated and a second O2 bung. But I don't have a welder.

What kind of welder did you use, or what would anyone recommend for such jobs? Would be for larger projects like custom downpipe or IC piping on occasion, but mainly smaller tasks so nothing too hard core is needed.

My birthday is coming up in 3 days, might have to ask for a welder haha.

There is quite a bit to consider when choosing a welder. I was using a Miller MIG welder, I would not recommend using a MIG for this kind of job, I mean it will work, but it won't come out as clean as a TIG welder. TIG welders are the welds you see on intercoolers, aluminum radiators, most non-cast manifolds...etc and are a lot more expensive for a good one ($800- $3000+).

The ones you see over at home depot are usually MIG or ARC welders...

There is a lot more dealing with selections, such as electrodes for the ARC or TIG, weld sticks, type of gas used for welding ... etc., but the main thing is that yes you can use those home depot welders, but If I could have afforded it I would have bought a TIG welder. Would have saved me half the time it took to make this one, once I had the hang TIG welding of course =).

Oh and Slippi, I saw that radiator and was about to get that one too, but Koyo was the largest core I could find.

Haha good point! Yeah I did want to get away from the turbo, but the amount of heat soak I am experiencing is causing me to rethink my route. I might also opt for a turbo jacket to help keep the temps down.
