came off the interstate tonite let off the gas and the car jerked hard nasty sounds from the rearend.it still drives but when u get on it the motor reves but no power.what am i to expect when i tear the rear dif apart?

So you can still drive around, but when you punch it the motor just revs? Sounds more like a clutch to me. If I remember right, even if you unhook the drive shaft you will still power the front wheels.

by nasty sounds i assume you mean screeching and grinding? when you rev does it feel like the car is trying to move? if it feels like its trying to pull forward but being held back you may have some rear diff damage.

Don't forget to check your transfer case too. If it wasn't the point of failure it may have been damaged if the rear diff locked. A quick check for both is pulling the drain plug and seeing what comes out (use a clean drain pan for each). Whichever has big chunks of metal or is very short on fluid is where I'd start.

As for what is inside and what to expect, check your repair manual. I hope it is a cheap fix. If it was the t-case check with the dealership to see if the recall has already been done.

the sound is coming from the trunk.did some asking and found out under power the gears are fine,it's when you let off the gears over lap and thats when you break a tooth and kaboom.put the car in the air tonite,i got alot of parts to take off.

On any hypoid style rear differential it's almost impossible to break a single tooth since many teeth are engaged together. That's why the pinion gear is 'twisted'... more gear contact area. Now, if there was debris in there that got caught between teeth that could break one off easily. Decelleration doesn't put any more stress on the gears than accelleration does.

Just pull the rear cover off and look inside before you drop the whole diff out. If the gears are damaged you'll see it right away.
