My engine is all back together and ready to go back into the car except 1 thing. I can't get the old seal out of the little bracket that holds it. I know it's tapped in there with a hammer, but I can't find a place to grab it and pull it out. How do you guys get the old seal out when changing the rear main seal? Thanks.

if youre trying to pull out the seal without pulling the 5 or 6 10mm bolts that hold the bracket in place...thats gonna be kinda impossible. I had to take off that bracket.Just lay it on a table and tap it out with a piece of wood and a hammer(place wood on seal then tap it out).It didnt say this in any manuals but i put a very thin layer of grey rtv around it just to assure any imperfections in the mount/bracket, are covered as I pressed the seal back in. It will press back in very easily from the back side. The chiltons wants you to try and press it in and pull it out from the front...I was going to try that, but it wasnt working. Also, make sure you have a new gasket for that main seal bracket/mount thingamajigger.

I checked the seal when I dropped the tranny and flywheel and all is well. As clean as the day the motor was dropped in. It has only been 3 weeks...but I have been pushing it to some limits.

good luck :thumb:

ok I figured it out. No I had the bracket off and everything but I thought just a rubber seal comes off and the thing that appears to be a metal insert in the bracket stays. Turns out the metal insert is part of the new seal..... I knew I should have opened the bag with the new seal. Thanks for the help.
