Rear cv shafts/axles???

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you knew where to get some new rear cv shafts/axles for our awd 2g's? One of my rear shafts are making funny noises and am afraid they are about to break. I don't like the idea of buying old, used, possibly about to break cv shafts, nor the idea of spending $800 for HALF a shaft from DSS (have to re-use old inner cv which is ridiculous..plus convert to lsd for those who dont have it already). I mean, what if its the inner cv that is failing, buying the $800 DSS shafts wont fit that, unless you get the $2000 shafts...

What can I do about getting new cv shafts? OR new inner cv's to go along with the DSS half shaft?

The only place to get real, OEM new axles is Mitsu. If you want a good, used unit, contact Miller Import Parts or look at the classifieds. Miller usually has plenty of used ones. Is a boot torn? Usually a torn boot is what leads to a failure as the grease will be slung out of the tear. If you find a torn boot before the shaft becomes noisy, you can usually get a new boot, clean the old stuff out, repack with grease and install the new boot and youre good. If you catch an axle when if first begins to make noise, you can sometimes rob a tripod bearing off another axle, install a new or good, used boot packed with new grease and you will be ok, but the inside of the cup will become severely worn if you allow the axle to clickity clack for an extended period. If I were you, if a boot is torn, Id take the axle off, remove the cup with the torn boot, take the boot and tripod bearing to a cv repair shop and have them match the tripod and boot and install the new stuff yourself for cheap.

GSX owners, how often do you have to replace the rear shafts?

Ive owned several AWD DSMs over the last 13 years or so, (coincidentily a Talon, Eclipse and now a Laser hehe) ,and the only time Ive needed to replace a rear axle is when I broke off a 3 bolt lsd axle when launching the car, but after upgrading to a four bolt rear, Ive never had an issue and now Ive got an EVO LSD in the rear, so we will see if I end up wrecking an axle at the track.

I've had to replace a rear axle when I couldn't get the axle free from the wheel bearing/hub. I think it was about $250 through a dealership, IIRC.

Do the dealers even sell these anymore?

They still do sell them, at least JNZtuning can get them from mitsubishi. You can also get the inner CV/boot/inner cup. They also have the boot kits, comes with clamps and grease.

GSX owners, how often do you have to replace the rear shafts?

I have a 99 GSX with 204,000 miles. I've only replaced the rear axles once....however I do have to replace the inner boots yearly or so. The car is lowered about 1.5" maybe 1.7" and that makes the CVs run at a constant angle and the boot were not meant to be constantly flexed like that, so they seem to crack and split open. I only use factory boots and get them from JNZtuning.

So a Mitsubishi dealership is the ONLY place to get NEW, COMPLETE rear axles (other than $2K from DSS and $800 for HALF of it from DSS)?

Also, is it a complete rear axle/cv shaft, or is it HALF of it like DSS offers?

I looked into this about a year ago because my rear differential was trashed and the axels were rusted solid to the hub. Any ways the dealer was 700 an axel that is complete with cup to hub. The axels I got were from dsm graveyard (not the junk yard place, and I know tons of people don't like them but it worked for me) any ways they only sold the outer part of the shaft so you had to reuse your cups. Which I reused got a new boot from the dealer and repacked it with grease and it has worked perfectly. No part store carries rear axels at least the one I checked. They are getting harder to find brand new.

Yes, it's unfortunate but it's true.

The Mitsu axles are also available as two separate units: the outer portion and the inner cup, but apparently both are available. The $700 quoted in this thread sounds low to me, but I haven't checked prices in a while. One thing is certain though, they aren't cheap.

Makes me want to sell this car real bad
