These guys know how to build a car. Checkout their site SuperLite Cars Made in the USA, Engineered to Win on the Street and Track by Race Car Replicas

PS - I am not in any way affiliated with RCR, found this info and wanted to pass the word :)

I've even though about MegaSquirt but everyone swears by LINK.

I keep trying to get this across to the Apex guys, but I am not sure if I am succeeding. IMO, picking a good racing platform has to do with available tuning options. If there isn't one, you can often revert to Megasquirt, which is OK, but... DSMs have something that, ON ITS OWN, is good enough to choose this platform! Never mind the awesome 4G63 engine :).

I think that that it would take a couple of 600hp 4G63 Apex's running ECM Link to convince them :)

I think that would do the trick :sneaky: I'm going to watch very closely on the first few builds and see how this whole project shapes up. I still have a few reservations before I go committing 30-40k.

A really quick spooling high pressure turbo paired up with a 35R would be sickness in something less than 2800 pounds. It's a good thing Fran made room for 19x12s in the rear.

@Leon Oh, and your posts with actual weights, mad props! That went into everyone's spreadsheets.

You are welcome :).

I think that Apex can be closer to 2500-2600 lbs...

A GST is 2800lbs, subtract things like:

AC
Air bags
Race seats
Front/rear bumpers
Heavy rear glass/hatch
Full exhaust (15 ft long)
Steel body panels

And you should be able to drop it 200-300lbs ;) Maybe even more, depending on just how creative Fran will get with the new frames!

Fran just posted some awesome news:

OK Guys here is production spec on the Apex.
Apex -GTA.com will be the standalone website for the car that's currently under development.
The new Apex is now priced at $14,995 and includes the following components all built to the same standard as RCR/Superlite products.
Full replacement body panel set
Fully formed interior rear bulkhead
All self adhesive templates for OEM chassis modification
Front TIG welded DOM tubing subframe with OEM integrated mounting locations with revised mounting locations for suspension components
Rear TIG welded DOM tubing subframe with bolt in mounting system integration with revised mounting locations for suspension compnents
Two part adhesive and applicator
Fuel tank.
Vacuum formed rear window with scratch guard coating
Rear LED lights.
Parts required to assemble the Apex.
Second gen Eclipse/Talon bodyshell/drivetrain
A complete set of Corvette C5/C6 suspension and brakes.
Toyota Celica headlight package
Coilover shocks/spring package (available from us)
The engine packages we will be supplying mounting for are the OEM Mitsubishi 4G63 that came in the Mitsubishi/Talon and the LS4 FWD V8 drivetrain found in the Impala SS and Grand Prix GXP models only.
The chassis will have a modular mounting system that may allow other drivetrains to be installed but there will be no factory supplied mounts for anything other than shown above.
Please keep in mind that we will be offering a fully machined suspension system as an optional upgrade in the future, currently revised mounting locations utilizing the C5/C6 hardware will be the standard.

Please let me know what you think and feel free to drop us an email or give us a call....

Fran answered a few other questions as well:

- The C5/6 suspension will not use the factory leaf springs. It will be a coil over system. We will need to source control arms, hubs, uprights, bushings, and ancillary hardware. Fran estimated $1500 rotor to rotor including brakes for all 4 corners.
- Steering rack will come from RCR, not the vette

Still looks like CGI at this point. Albeit a good job with possibly some actual parts cropped in. I can't wait to see the actual photoshoot.

Finally! Some real photos!

Here is a set of Forgestar CF5's on the Apex. It's a quick down and dirty rim I made in Solidworks then did a little GIMP work and viola.

I'm surprised there is not more interest amongst dsmers for that project. I have been watching this project development closely for the past few years. That's actually the reason I bought my first dsm this past fall. Can't even imagine my current set up on a MR car minus 400lbs...

I am mostly interested in seeing the suspension and subframe. If anyone has photos of it I would be really curious how they did it. I read the following:

the subframes will be pictured attached to the chassis..the rear is actually much more than a subframe as its the whole rear half of the chassis

Never saw a picture though.

Too bad they are making LS4/Automatic tranny option :(

Yes I know, I suspect they are building John R. car, I remember him saying he would be using the ls4 platform and that he already paid for an Apex

Btw, it's good to see you active around here Leon... I would like to kept this thread alive... The more people interested in this project = better support and aftermarket options.

Cheers!

I think its a cool concept and even cooler they thought of the eclipse platform to use but after seeing a 4g63 slc in person being built at a local shop, I have my reservations on quality.
In particular the way the control arms were connected. I really want to see what they have in store for making a bolt on solution for a mid engine subframe.

Any idea on when they will release the kit to the public?

Not sure, if I had to guess sometime late summer/fall 2014, in time for SEMA perhaps...

I don't think there are any 4g63 SLC out there (the car isn't designed to accept transverse engine), what you saw is probably a Superlie Razor. The SLC has won NASA unlimited series in 2011 and has done extremely well at the 25h of thunderhill. If the controls arms can survive that I wouldn't be worried with whatever application you have in mind...

All their product are top notch, quality is the last of my worries, budget creep is more of a concern to me...

Here's some more pics of the car

I love the idea of a mid engines kit car with a 4g, but I hate the fake exotic kit car look. It looks cheap and the rear is hideous and doesn't match the front IMO. The front looks like a rip off of a current exotic, and the rear looks like a concept sportscAr from Kia or somthing. I'm sure it could be fun for the track though if you get it setup. Only Internet fanboys don't think you can make macstruts handle and the vette setup obviously works. Figure out tires and and alignment and your getting there. WhAt does it use for steering?

But I would be embarrassed about driving one of these on the street. You look like some wannabe. It s the same reason I finally sold my b5 Audi s4 after owning it from almost new. I felt like one of those douchebags who drive around in a 10+ year old m3, 3 series or some other cheap ass high line and think they are hot shot with some fancy car. Usually they like wait tables or sell cell phones.
