I have a 1Gb Talon with stock fans. My thermo sensor on the radiartor went out so I threw in a toggle switch. This is how I have it connected. I have two wires wires going from my radiator fan relay switch from the passenger side engine bay fuse box and those two wires go into the car and is connected to a toggle switch. Easy on/off switch.
It worked for a month or so, but then it started to drain a lot of power from my battery once it's toggled on. For example, when the fans are off Im running 14.5v but now when I turn the fans on it drops to as low as 12.5v AT IDLE. Once I rev up a little or start moving, it'll jump to around 13.5v and the switch would get really hot after a few mins. Eventually with the fans running, it will drain my battery to 9v where my battery would short out - Once I start driving my car would click and die, come back, click and die for about 5secs then completely die. I just disconnect the battery, wait a bit and reconnect it and it would work fine again.
NOW, just today I had my fan on for no more than 5minutes and my switch is so hot, it melts the plastic that is holding the switch in place. I turn it off and park when I get to school. The switch got so hot that the metal switch even broke! It's no longer connected so I can turn it on or off, it just sits there wobbly-like.
Is there something I have to redo to make it so not so much current is going to my switch? I've researched and found that I could add a relay to both wires going to the switch, but how would I go about doing this? Im a noob when it comes to electrics so I cant figure this out on my own. Any help would be much appreciated. I need to fix this before it gets any colder. If all fails, I'll just get a new temp sensor for my radiator and take off the switch.

Seeing how your still in school, I'm guessing your still a kid or young adult. A word of advise in your car situation and in life, Don't half @$$ things. Your thermo switch went out and you figured it out, good, but putting in a switch is not the proper way to fix the problem. I mean really, the thermo switch can't be more then like $30 bucks, prob cheaper from the junkyard, and you prob spent $7 on a toggle switch and wire. So Just fix the thermo switch and junk all that wire and toggle stuff. Get your car back to stock working order. It will pay off in the end.
