toronto,
Hey guys, have a question... I'm heading to the track this weekend and I want some advice. The car in question is a 92 FWD, in really excellent running shape. EVERYTHING is ready to go, I say this speaking from years of DSM experience, so I know what I'm talking about. Mods include; ported exhaust manifold, aluminum intake pipe, 2.5" Upper IC pipe, and 3" MAF w. MAF-T, and a custom ECU chip, everything else is BONE STOCK/ORIGINAL.

NOW here in lays my question, I want to know if I should purchase a few gallons of race gas or not... I have alot of experience with tuning w. MAF-T, and fancy myself pretty good at squeezing every bit of power outta these cars at the track. My thought was pop a few gallons of unleaded 114 oct. in a near empty tank of gas and start tuning/increasing boost until I get where I wanna be... which is Mid-High 13's. I also plan on removing maybe 150 pouds of weight outta this thing before racing as well.

So, experienced DSMers with race gas experience what do you think? Get the race gas, or do my best with 94 octane?
Thanks.

edit... before anyone chimes in with a traction comment, I know all about it already! I'm confident I will cut 2.0-2.1 60' on street tires, becuase I know how to launch this car extremely well, and it isn't a high horsepower beast by any means. Last few days I have been experimenting with tire pressures as well, find traction comes alot easier with about 22psi in the front, and about 36psi in the back.

I have personally seen dyno's with 20+whp from using 100+ octane Gas, over 94 octane pump gas.

I would, IMHO, see what I can do on pump, then crank up the boost and use a mixture of race gas and see what kind of numbers I can acheive.

Well, I bought 10L of 112 unleaded tonight after work... I plan on dumping all that in the tank after a few runs on pump, to help get the gas tank pretty close to empty!

Why wouldn't you use race gas? You can more boost, more timing, run leaner a/f, and generally make more power.

fancy this fancy pants:

if you're sick at tuning the maft (so you say) and you're questioning if you should use race gas, then evidently you have never tuned a maft setup on race gas, and have no idea what kind of timing advance you'll see at high boost with a dash of high octane.

My advice - stick to what you know. Keep it simple and cheap (is race gas $ an issue - cause it's about the same price these days...) 13's are so boring. I got into 12's on pump. Shoot for the same. However, your issue lies within traction and the killer 60ft. Hope for a decent trap speed my son...

Because it's nice to know what your car will run day in and day out, not just one night at the track when you dump in race gas and crank the boost.

That's nice you ran 12s in an AWD... I'm happy for you, this is not an AWD...
Yes its true I have not tuned MAF-T but, I considered it a learning experience, gotta start somewhere right!

green92gsx: I know there is a drain bolt on the gas tank... I just didn't care that much to get under the car to do it... If I had a more "serious" car maybe I would have.
