I just intalled a microtech EMS system on my friends 97 gst. It has a 7 bolt block with 1g head and 1g CAS. Microtech requires to set timming at 10* and when i look at the timing belt cover there are these timing marks...

1st mark with a T (letter)
2nd mark a line (no number)
3rd mark with 10* (number)
4th mark with a line (no number)

Witch one of the 1st or 2nd marks are the 0*?

When i set it up for 10* on the 1st mark and then with the gun, ret. to 0* it only moved to the second not marked line when it should go to the 10* mark (3rd)

ill try again.. ok

I was told by the light gun owner that how the gun works is that i can setup 10* at the gun, then adjust the CAS so the mark on the pulley is at 0* on the timing belt cover. to confirm that the car is at 10* I should retard from 10* to 0* in the gun and the mark of the pulley should move to 10* on the timing belt cover but only goes from "T" to the second mark. (is this 5* ?)

so if I setup 10* according the second mark and retard to 0* with the gun, then it will move to 10* third mark

sorry if its not clear... if pictures will help understand please request it

Do it the easy way and set the gun to "zero or O" and adjust the CAS to where the timing mark reads 10* on the flywheel and cover

The way the gun works is for when you have only a "T" or "O" mark ( well there's more uses than that, but i'm trying to make it simple) If you are turning the gun to 10, and the CAS is properly set at 10*, you should be seeing the flywheel line up with teh "T" mark on the plastic cover when the light strikes it. It basically dials a retard factor into the lights pulse for setting timing when there's only one mark for TDC or top dead center which is also 0* timing.

I hope that helps.

sorry, english is my second lenguage

Not a problem.

As explained it's easier to ignore the timing advance built into the timing light. Just set it to zero and the adjust the CAS until the timing marks are where you want them.
