Quick cooling question

If I let my car idle for a couple minutes, the fan should turn on, correct?
I'm having cooling issues and I want to knock out the simple checks first. I assume the answer is yes, but I don't want to run it and have it not turn on and automatically think that's the problem.

Let the car hit full temp and it should kick on once it hits a certain temp. The AC fan wont kick on unless you wire it to the main fan. Sometimes there is situations if its cool out where the car wont kick the fan though.

the car needs to heat up. it wont kick on the fan if the engine is cold. at least it shouldn't

take the car for a rip but just watch the gauge, and if anything pull the plug to the fan and run the pos. wire to the battery straight and see if it kicks on it might even be a bad fan...

Update: The fan is running, I think the problem was a loose wire. In my RS, where the radiator cap is, there are two wires connected underneath it and one was loose. Could this have caused my problem? It was a little black wire and it just clips onto a piece of protruding metal which I'm assuming is a sensor in the T-stat housing. I could take a picture later if it helps describe it...
