Ok so I got my new EvoIII 16g in the mail today from extremepsi.

everything looks great but there is a very tiny amount of shaft play. I would say about half a milimeter each way leading to about 1 mm of total shaft play, this is side to side. In and out there is NO shaft play. It's not enough to keep the blades from spinning, but I just wanna make sure the turbo wasn't damaged in shipping. Any help is appreciated. A new turbo should have NO shaft play, right?

No, a turbo SHOULD have play when you first get it and it's brand new. Once you get some oil in it and let it break in there should be zero shaft play.

Yes a little shaft play is normal, even after its installed and ran it might have a little. My 18g had some play when i bought it brand new, put 300 miles on it and it has less shaft play, but it still has some. Perfectly normal.

thanks guys, i got the turbo, dsmlink, fuel pump, injectors, and slowboy fmic ready to go on soon, I'll let yall know how it goes.

There should be less than 1mm of in and out shaft play. Less than 4 mm side to side.

in and out shaft play isn't too good and can be eliminated by a rebuild kit.
up and down shaft play is normal because there is space between the shaft and bearing to allow oil to go between the shaft and bearing to act like minute bearings. when a turbo is hot there should be extremely little shaft play if you like burning your hands check and make sure. But if there is too much up and down it will wear the shaft and snap. To fix it it would cost to have the shaft milled down and new bearings resized to it, plus a rebuild.
A little info I got from a 20 year turbo expert
