just got pulled over and hood popped for exhaust. im really thinking of changing my magnaflow 3 inch turbo exhaust but im not sure which one to go with:hmm: i just want to be less noticeable because i live in the ridiculous modified car hating state of California. please give me some suggestions thanks :thumb:

There is a thread on here by my buddy who found a silent muffler, wiseman matt lafond, with the silver 2gsx.

i tried searching for that one, but i dont think my wording was correct.

Move out of the fascist state into a state that understands the definition of volumetric efficiency. Your personal liberty shouldn't be violated to satisfy special interest groups that have infected the weak minds of politicians with pseudoscientific drabble about emissions.

thank you, i was looking for that

haha:p i hear you, I like california, hate the damn rules for modifying cars!

I hate exhaust laws. Especially ones based on sound. I have never met a DSMer with an aftermarket exhaust (read: catalytic converter still on, just a turbo back, street driven car) that is louder than these a-holes on Harley's, or Mustangs, but they never get pulled for it. Stupid "cannot be louder than factory" rules are dumb, especially when they justify it as disturbing the neighborhood...oh so if my car wakes the dead as a factory option that is okay, but if my noiseless 4 cylinder exhaust now sounds like your average V6, that's completely out of control...idiot politicians.

I don’t think you can buy that one and install it on your car either.... I didn’t see the state mandated “This product is known to the state of California to causes cancer" sticker on it.. :p

hahaha... so what do you recommend?

Are you kidding?! WTF Blizzards are so much better than earthquakes.

haha, i wouldnt know :(

You might get away with making a fake "CARB" sticker or plaque. Sort of like how some bikers in the Army put the D.O.T. stickers on helments that are NOT DOT certified..*shrug* just an idea, not saying it's the right thing to do.

Megan Racing makes a OEM looking 3 inch muffler. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either.

Honestly, I think it's a very good looking muffler but some hate them. It will at least make the police question if your exhaust is stock or not.

Thank you, i'll def check that out:thumb:

Do like I did and put a stock catback on that way you have the stock system and a cat so no CEL and no cop trouble...

Just run a 3" downpipe with a bullet style muffler to a cutout(manual or electric) just before the cat... You get the best flow with the sound of still having a muffler on your system(open downpipe is way to LOUD)

So did they actually test your exhaust as provided by California Law or just issue you a ticket because your exhaust is "modified" i.e. not stock. If they ask for a certification or anything you do not have to answer (unless it's your name, address, or other basic identifying information) it's part of your 5th amendment rights. Make them prove everything. The burden of proof is on them not you. So next time you get pulled over and your feeling cheeky excise your rights.

All the information you need to know about the law is located here. It's also partially digested for you. In the end all you really need to know is: you need a muffler with no bypasses, cut outs, etc and it can't be louder than 95db under the criteria stated in the law. What it does not say is: modified exhausts are illegal. They can not issue a ticket because the exhaust is modified or they think it's loud. That stuff just doesn't cut it in a court of law. I've asked for a definition of loud in court before and how they knew it was louder than stock. No one had a reasonable answer.

I advise never pleading guilty to anything unless you're clearly guilty and even then there's some wiggle room. You have to understand if you go to court, clearly know the law and display a willingness to fight for your position they will offer you a deal or dismiss tickets. The court system can not adjudicate all matters that come before them and prey upon people that "just want to plead guilty and pay the fine so the ticket goes away."

I get exhaust tickets dismissed all the time in New York State. The law isn't all that different here except they don't have an allowable limit for exhaust noise. It only states that it can't be louder than stock, which creates ambiguity. No one in they're right mind knows what a stock exhaust sounds like on every car nor do officers ever test anything so exhaust tickets disappear faster than it took the officer to write it.

Police here just look at me and go "you know modifying your exhaust is illegal." I just say ok and if they give me a ticket I don't sweat it. NYS does allow for a shop to examine your exhaust and if it's all there without holes, cut out, bypasses, etc and you clearly have a muffler you're good to go. They fill out a waiver, you send it in and bye bye ticket.

You can't really fight a cop on the street about this issue, my advice is to say yes sir and be on your way. Then fight it afterwards, trust if your a jerk to the cop he'll have an easier time being even more of a jerk to you (by sighting you on other violations you may or may not have). You do have the right to have them prove everything but in my experience save the fight for later.

I didnt actually get a ticket but i do not want to chance getting one or get the dreaded state ref ticket. That sounds pretty cool that you have the option in new york to bring it to a shop so they inspect the muffler.

yeah, ive read too much stuff to just be polite and courteous. i was pretty damn nervous though when i got pulled over, i think i was stuttering.:barf:

Join the military and change ## residency to Oregon. Some tiny ass town in the back woods would be great. Only Emissions are in Portland and no state inspections:)
Cally sucks for shit like that. Best of luck into finding a good comprimise
