Pull engine with head off?

I've got a 92 tsi awd that broke a timing belt, and I bought it with the head off. There is a hole in one of the pistons so I am just going to pull the 7-bolt and drop in a 6-bolt I pulled out of a 90 gst.
My question is: how do I attach a hoist if the head is off? I looped the chain around the intake and exhaust manifolds before.

Just pull it up by the studs that attach the head to the block if you're not going to reuse the block. If you don't have any, just run to a hardware store and pick something up that will work.

I've seen people hook to the exhaust manifold studs( stock there is a bracket for pulling on my 1g) and the intake bolts. I would use your stock head bolts and hoist with those.

Just wondering, how are you going to pull it by the headstuds?

I put the headbolts each through one of the four loops on my tilt bar and bolted them in to the four corners, worked like a charm.

I use factory head bolts through the hoisting chain. You need a decent size chain for the bolts to squeeze through a link.

I have reused several blocks after using this method. I find it easier than pulling the engine with the head on.

So I'm assuming this isn't a safe thing to do? But how bout just a one time thing?

I see it as being safer than hooking to an exhaust manifold stud and an intake bolt.

There would have to be something incredibly wrong for you to pull the threads out of the block or snap a head bolt just lifting the engine. In fact I would pull it with the trans attached as well using that method.

I also do not like wrapping the chain around an engine or trans because there is always some slack left over and the load can unintentionally move.

I normally on a 1g use the stock motor mount studs right behind the PS pump and the Intake manifold bracket that goes from the throttle body to the head. But, in your case this is a 2g and having no head I would use one of the bolt holes where the Water Pump would mount then go diagonally across the block to one of the starter mount bolts. Depending on your positioning of the chain will depend on how strait it comes up. I like to attach the chain closer to the driver's side that way it will give me a nice angle to work with as I have no leveler.

I disconnected it from the tranny and Lowered it through the bottom by hand. Its less than 200lbs with everything disconnected so it is doable.
