Hello everyone,

First off I want to start out by saying that I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to mitsubishi mechanics. With that said, I currently have a primary car and thinking of selling it to get 2 cars, 1 as a daily driver and 1 fun car for the weekend only. The fun car is the one I need consulting on, as one of my favorite cars of all time is the 2g eclipse after the face lift. I want to buy a very very cheap eclipse rs or gs or whatever and make it a gsx, in other words a convertion. Please keep in mind that I am aware it may be expensive but also keep in mind 2 things, the 1st thing is that I will be buying parts at times and installing them myself as is also a hobby and want to learn, and 2nd things is that the car I'm looking at is about 500 dollars and a gsx in good condition would start at least 8k and don't know how good shape it's going to be over all and all of that.

The reason I want a gsx is because the all wheel drive and just wanted to know what parts are needed for this convertion. Also I heard that there's is a common problem with the eclipse and I believe is called crankwalk so if someone can confirm how accurate is this, what is it and if there's a fix or preventing method for this.

Thank you in advance.

keep the rs or gs what it is. everything about it is wrong for awd.if you want to convert a fwd to awd then get a gst or gst spyder. or even a mirage or gallant 94-98 year. make a 2 door evo or clone a gallant vr4. those both have the correct set up for turbo and awd capability. crank walk itself is very rare. not common at all. thats like calling a new chevy reliable and recall proof. we all know thats a big fat lie LOL. you're more likely to win the lottery than crank walk. if its a 90-94 and 97.5-99 you're more likely to have a vending machine fall on you. that alone is a 1 in 15 million chance. the engines that could is the 95/96 years. and after a rebuild its not likely to crank walk again.

I can say in my experience my 95 talon tsi crank walked stock motor and the rebuilt motor from the same block.
But i got a 7 bolt 4g63 split thrust block motor im going to throw in my car soon. If it crank walks I'll be frustrated. I've got some cash on that build id rather not see wasted.
But i figured id try that before giving up on 7 bolt 4g63s.
Ive seen one 6 bolt crank walk but only one.
Every one seem to think it's rare to crank walk any 4g63.
but I'm unlucky i guess.
Also I've seen a gst converted into a gsx as far as fwd to awd and a gsx converted into a gst as in awd to fwd but yah
I would think if you can get one of thouse it would be cheaper.
But im shore any rs or gs could be modified to except awd but it would cost less to just buy a gst and or Gsx or a tsi. Just my thoughts...

Yes it is possible but not worth it IMHO. It would be a lot easier to get a GST for around 1500-1800 then make that AWD. And for 1500-1800 I'm sure it will be running just has some miles. I got mine for 1800 it was miss firing and fuel leak. Tightened filter and changed spark plugs and she has been so good to me for the last 5 years. Maintenance is all done finally.

here is a good post about swapping into a RS/GS. Basically it's not worth it. GST's can be had for decent prices pretty easy. And that is a fun swap going AWD from a GST as iv read and plan on doing when I get a house.

Any who good luck on your search and what ever you choose.

Thank you so much for the input guys, I don't mind getting a gst for 1800 if it's going to be easier to convert to awd which is the only thing I like from the gsx. Now with that said, why would a gst be a better candidate and what parts would I need to convert? If anybody can kind of estimate how much would the parts cost it would be great. Keep in mind guys that the points of buying a crappy rs or gs is because I'm planing to do an engine swap anyways because I got a main concern with high mile engines and would prefer to have low miles.

Thanks again

Thanks a lot 2gGst98, that link is very helpful to understand what needs to be done, seems like a lot of time to spend on the car but that's not bad at all....the only thing I might not feel too comfortable doing is the welding but there is probably somebody that weld it for a price. all the process is pretty straight forward and the only hard part sounds like the rear. The main reason I want to do this is because I want to have a fun car I can take to the track that has at least 500hp to the wheels and I heard from a guy who works on evos only that, with over 300 or 400hp on front wheels drives is a nightmare because of traction problems.

Thanks a lot again guys, this is very helpful.

You should definitely consider getting a gst or a talon tsi fwd if you're looking for something cheaper, but within the realm of possibility. Remember that the wiring harness is going to be different for the 420a cars, and that's a whole ordeal that you probably don't want to deal with.

You'll be able to convert any year 2g talon or eclipse to the 2gb eclipse look you want, and if you're up for the awd swap and everything else then it'll be relatively easy to do the face lift for you.

Don't be afraid to travel for the right car if you plan on doing a ton of work to it. One measely day of driving won't compare to the months you'll spend building it.
