Hey guys,

I recently had an ACT 2100 clutch kit installed with a street disk and have been having some issues with it since.

1. I hear a weird noise while shifting gears. When disengaging the clutch to shift gears I would hear this kinda grinding noise coming from the engine bay. It only does it at higher revs. It also makes this noise when I am at a dead stop revving the engine while having the clutch disengaged, when I am about to launch the car in other words. This time I also felt some vibration with my foot on the clutch pedal. It is like if something was touching something while having the clutch disengaged. What could it be?

2. Every time I try to make the clutch slip the car starts shaking. It usually does it when about to take off slowly like while parking the car or in bumper to bumper traffic but it also does it when I am already at higher speeds but engaging the clutch a bit slower that usual.
It may sound like my motor mounts are going bad but I really don't think that they are. I never had problems like this with my previous clutch.

3. I am getting a noise coming from the tranny area while decelerating only when in gear.

Have any of you guys had these problems before? What is wrong with my clutch?

Thanks,
Bali

Have you already done the 500 miles break-in period? I don't think it would be recommended to go around launching on a clutch with less than 500 miles.

ACT redesigned their pressure plate and disc, and if you're using mixed and matched versions, you can have the springs rub. I'm no transmission expert though.

The clutch was installed a while back and I was easy on it for quite a while.

I bought it in a kit so I would assume the items match... good call tho!

No telling what version of each the reseller you bought from had. Did you take a pic of the disk and/or save the packaging?

Couple other thoughts:

- Did you use an OEM Mitsu throwout bearing? The plastic sleeved one that ACT used to sell was notorious for it's short useless life.

- Did you make sure to loc-tite + properly tork the flywheel bolts?

- Did make sure both locator dowles on the tranny were present during reinstall?

It's also possible one of the springs popped out or is loose and/or the flywheel step is not correct :dsm:

my 7 bolt made a grinding noise when pushing the clutch to the floor...turned out to be crankwalk! i had no other signs of it either...no sticking clutch pedal..no hard shifts...everything was butter until the grinding!

anythings possible! good luck!

I did not save the packaging unfortunately but I do have a picture, please see below.
I did use an ACT TOB, I didn't know they were bad. The new OEM ones are plastic sleeved also.
Bolts are torqued properly and tranny was installed fine.
About the grinding sound I think I may just have to adjust the clutch... I will give that a go some time and give you guys an update. The problem is that I won't have a chance to do that for more than a week :(

You are scaring the crap out of me! :beatentodeath:

I don't think this picture is very helpful, but here it is:

I don't think it is crankwalk, it started making the sound right after the new clutch was installed. It made no sound before.
...well, I hope it isn't crankwalk:cry:

The shaking is a completely different issue for sure, just don't know what it is yet.

Oh man.....I am having the EXACT same 3 issues

I fixed the grinding part by adjusting the clutch a bit. Does it only grind when you push the clutch all the way in?

If you guys could help us figure this out, it would be amazing. I installed a Centerforce Dual Friction w/ the Mitsu OEM (metal-sleeved) TOB, so I imagine that's not the issue.

If this is crankwalk, I might just shat my panties...Guess there's no way to tell unless I pull the stupid thing back apart.

Anyone have any ideas? Pleeeeaaaase?!?!??!

EDIT: The deceleration noise only happens for me when I've got the thing in gear, but clutch in.

Yeah, I think the grinding sound will go away by adjusting the clutch.

The vibration while slipping the clutch is clutch chatter I think due to not getting my flywheel resurfaced. Did you?

The deceleration noise only happens in gear while clutch being engaged... Maybe your brakes are making the sound or one of your wheel bearing. Or is the noise coming from the tranny area?

Yeah for me it was almost like i was pushing the clutch too far in.

I got mine resurfaced.

Nope definitely clutch-related. If I'm not in gear, it wont make the noise. I could feel it a little also. This for me has pretty much gone away now.

It goes away in about 100 miles. I had the same issues when I got my ACT 2100 with their 6 puck sprung hub disc.

I was hoping that was the case, but I've got over 1500 miles on this clutch now and it seems like it's getting worse.

The original poster and I are using the ACT 2100, you have a CFDF, the issues may not be the same.

True true.....

Check this out - I looked up under my car and theres a small gap where the rear dowel pin goes into the block. This gets smaller as you go up the back of the trans and the tranny is pulled in tight at the top and front. I'm hoping this might be the issue, but problem is, I checked all my bolts and they are all completely tight. I tried putting a jack under the trans and due to the L & R motor / trans mounts, it seemed to go back together.

I just put a new bellhousing on, so I'm wondering if the stupid thing wasnt decked completely straight or something....

Bleh, guess I need to bite the bullet, take it to a shop and have her looked at...:sosad:

Did you make sure that there were no dowels on the new bellhousing? If so you may have had a dowel on both sides (both BH and Block) which would definitely cause the gap you see :dsm:

haha nooo nooo noo....

The dowels are on the BH in the 2g's. It's not that big of a gap anyway :p
