Grrrrr.....Anyone else have troubles with there act clutch chattering??? just put in last night and has a horrible shake when you engage it...clutch chatter....new machined flywheel....i mean theres nothin much else there...i am licensed mechanic and have did more then my share of clutches..they say they will warrenty but just wonderin if it is common??? anyone???

This does happen. The 2100 I put in my 98 AWD a few years ago chattered so horribly I replaced it with a stock clutch.

The 2100s I have had in my 95, fitted to a Fidanza flywheel, have not chattered at all, they have performed flawlessly (well not quite flawlessly - they keep wearing out, so strictly speaking...).

It could be the flywheel step - that was the only difference (not counting weight) I found between the flywheels, the Fidanzas steps are dead on, whereas the step on the first 98 flywheel was not.

Mine chattered like crazy the first thousand miles or so. I think it is just because it is really grabby at first but as you break it in the chatter goes away. I was worried at first but now I have no chatter and I have about 5k or so on it. I have the XACT flywheel so there should be no issues with the step on the flywheel. All of this was brand new and went on in December.

Thanx for all the info....i thought if this was the norm then more people would have known about it....with all the guys running these clutches and this was the case i am sure more people would respond....but you are right to a point i think....i have already got a warrenty clutch but dont want to put it in and do the same thing....i only have like 100miles on it so far...mabe i will give it some time and let it seat into flywheel....thanx for the help atleast i am not to the only one with this problem.....now that yours has stopped chattering how does it hold up for you??? any others problems?? i have around 300hp at engine and want to go up to about 350 or so...i think this 2100 should hold up....

I have an ACT 2100 in my 96 I haven't had any chatterinmg though

It seems to be holding fine. I have had some issues with the car and just got the AFC back in. I haven't been running that much boost until I can get everything tuned. It should be able to hold 350 HP at the crank. I look at it this way, I rather have a little slip then broken trannies. I have to drive my car daily and cannot afford to have it down. Once I am done with school in June and can work fulltime again I will look at building it up, but I have not decided what direction I am going to go with the car yet. My goal for now is about 300HP and I think I am pretty close.

Yeah, the ACT 2100 chatters during the initial 500 mile break in or so, got me worried at first. The engagement was like an on off switch, once past the break in though it engages as smooth as the stock clutch. I'm running more than 350 h.p., only time the clutch slipped was right after putting in the cams, could see it on the datalogs. Happened only for like the first week after the cam install, then it never slipped again, weird. I'm making even more torque and horsepower now and not a bit of clutch slip. I've got about 25,000 miles on it with all of them in the 300-375 h.p. range. I hardly ever launch the car, but when I do it holds up just fine.

I get chatter at idle but when i push the clutch in it goes away. Anyone else experience this? The chatter isnt that loud but its annoying enough to get on my nerves. I have a act flywheel and a 2100lb clutch kit and i used the throwout bearing act supplied. trying to find out if its normal or not?

editing post: I have about 1,000 miles on both flywheel/clutch now, and broken them both in for 150 miles.

20. What could cause clutch chatter?

Chatter is when the car shudders as the clutch is being engaged. Possible cause may be as follows:

Flywheel has excessive run-out.
Flywheel was not resurfaced or improperly resurfaced before the new clutch was installed.
Damaged or excessively worn CV joints.
Bad U-Joints in drive shaft or U-Joints misaligned.
Excessive backlash in differential.
Excessive driveline angle.
Bad leaf springs, bushings or mounts.
The use of an aggressive clutch disc designed for racing.
Defective pressure plate and/or disc.
Disc has inadequate Marcel (Not enough cushion between the friction facing.).
Oil or grease contamination on clutch facings.
Worn or damaged clutch linkage.
Bent pressure plate assembly and/or disc.
Improperly tuned engine.
Worn or damaged engine mounts or transmission mounts.

I think you have something other than chatter, probably that throwout bearing, should have used a mitsu...

Anyhow my stocker did that for 2 years with no problems until I recently installed a 2100 and act flywheel
