problems after new caps on ECU

Well heres the deal... I just recently added new capacitors to my ECU because my other ones were leaking. My car still worked before i added the new caps and started up with out a problem. So with the new caps in and the ecu back into my car it does not start. ive tried a number of things and im lost. my car cranks and cranks but doesnt start. so i was told to try and see if it starts if i unplug the fuel pump. I did this and it started up very sluggish and smoking so much until it died a few minutes later. i tried pluging the fuel pump back in and it would just crank over and over and not start,flooding itself. I even tried pluging the pump in while it was running unpluged and it died the moment i pluged it in. I have no idea what the porblem is. all i know that ever since i took the damn ecu out it has not worked. i need help! thanks.

Are you sure you put the caps in the correct way? They are polarized like a battery with a + and - side.

I am positive they are in right. I have taken electronic classes in the past. I did a very neat job doing this.

Are you sure you didn't lift the pads from the PCB? If you apply too much heat this will happen. Also, when you turn the key on, does the CEL come on for a few seconds then turn itself off?
Did you replace the caps because they were leaking, or as preventative maintenence? If they were leaking, how badly was it and did you make sure to clean it all up?

Well the leak wasnt that pad and i cleaned it. the CEL comes on but doesnt go off. i dont think i lifted the pads from the board.

If the CEL is coming on but not going off, the ECU isn't finishing it's startup process - if it's an EPROM ECU bad code on the chip or open traces between the socket & the MCU will cause it. I've never encountered it in a non-eprom though.

im going to a few junk yards tommorow to try and find a used ECU. or im going to send it away

steve will be able to tell you after initial inspection the extent of damage and cost of repair or if it's even repairable. I would much rather pay steve to fix it than to take another chance with another ecu from a junk yard and start the whole process over again.

well i will definetily send it away if i have no choice. I have to go back to school and this DSM is my only ride. Even if i can find something temporary and in decent shape at the junk yard ill be lucky. thanks for your help and the link oldman.
