just trying to figure out cheaper or any alternatives to swapping out the whole engine. im not even sure if the head or the block has the crank. But would it be possible to put a 2g head on a 1g block or vice versa, what ever would help the problem. Just wanted to get some opinions because crankwalk is always on my mind.

Unfortunately there is no real way to prevent crankwalk:cry: . Either you get hit with it or you don't, so just pray really really hard. But there are ways to safeguard yourself, but these are no guarantee of preventing crankwalk.

1.) Always change your oil on time

2.) Don't mod your car too much in the power department

3.) Don't slam the clutch

Again even people who practice this religiously can still get crankwalk. And on the opposite side of this, people can change oil when the season changes, push the car past the 13sec barrier, and drop the clutch at every red light and never experience crankwalk.

And I wouldn't worry about crankwalk too much. Even at it's worste, crankwalk never got to more than 18%. That means it will only affect one in every 5 cars (at it's very worst that is. I think the average for the entire 2G line is 7%) so the odds are with you.

So like I said at the beginning of this: Pray

CMF

Sometimes I wonder if oil weight has to do with it (if the oil squirters are the problem) seeing if you use heavier oil its harder for the squirters to work...anyway, I'm at 109K now and I haven't got CW, what have I done:
- Use Synthetic
- change oil every 6K
- I've flushed my motor twice since I've owned it.
- Don't ride the clutch
- I don't LAUNCH my car every chance I get, only when the opponent may be a challenge.

On a poll here I took a percentage of how many people got crankwalk in comparison to those who didn't...32% OMG got crankwalk..but also remember I think most people here are not stock and there are SOO many different factors that COULD be involved in getting crankwalk.

If you really fear crankwalk, keep your car stock don't upgrade it, then again stock cars get it too.

I think the basis for avoiding crankwalk is luck at this point until the reason is discovered. Thrust bearing is the bearing that goes out, however plenty of people have reported replacing the thrust bearing it just happens again, sometimes 2 or 3 times!

Again, don't take the statistics I put out as reliable percentage wise, most of us here mod their car I'm sure its much lower if we could get more than just this board.

3k!! MAYBE 5k if you feel like it, but i really dont care about synthetic or not...3k is when i change my oil. better safe than sorry!!

AJ

::shrug:: I rarely do the 3K thing, its usually always over. Synthetic can take more than convential... even at 6K the oil is slightly darker than it was when I first put it in, not that thats a indication of dirty oil, but still I don't see a problem with waiting longer than 3,000 miles on synthetic.

Thanks to this board I also have that little crank walk worry in the back of my head. I had my clutch replaced with an excedy with the mitsu Throw out bearing and run synth. My car has minor mods. Still stock turbo. It seems to me that CW hits thos who put upgraded clutches in such as ACT or some people that go to far with a stage 4 racing clutch on their 95 GS or RS. No fact to that just personal opinion. When and if it happens it will happen. There is nothing you can do about it. My car now has 116,xxx on it and runs great. The only thing I can suggest is to buy a 6 bolt and keep in the garage for the rainy day. If you can afford it.

In regards to that poll. I'm sure almost everyone that saw that poll who had experienced cw participated whereas many of those with cars that haven't been hit with cw neglected it on account of laziness or no concern. 32% is probably fairly high.

how does crank walk have to do w/ oil changes? regular oil changes is definitely good to keep the engine in good shape, but crank walk is when the factory built the crank bearings, the bearings tolerance was out of spec, so the crank rotation is not centered/balanced, afterawhile, it starts to eat into the bearings, thus, the there's slop between crank shaft and the bearings, once the slop gets big enough, the crank would spin with a much larger range of motion that it takes out the crank angle sensor which on 2g is positioned in the block, at that point, you're done,

you can measure crank play and that would give you an idea how's your block doing...

i am not 100% but that's what i've read and think what make sense...

oh yeah, i've heard that starting the car while stepping on the clutch is something to avoid when preventing crank walk, so disconnect your clutch sensor so that you can start the car w/o having to step on the clutch,

Actually its like 1 in 40 (stock) cars get CW...
obviously more if your modded
@ www.dsm.org there are some great tech articles about people solving CW and read what they have to say.
ppl who have had crankwalk go to CW posts 100times more often then ppl with CW...

so 1 in 5 is 100% biased...

BTW your crankshaft is in the actual block connected to the connecting rods which are connect to the pistons that move up and down :p

its not in the head, hehe

and yes a 1g head swap to a 2g is a VERY VERY good mod to do

Some things you can do to fight crank walk:

Remove Balance Shafts, Balance motor, ARP Main/head Studs, dont run an act 2600-check out the ironman from MachV-Im hearing amazing things about it.

I looked into the 1g head swap on to the 2g cuz i blew my head a while back, its a cool thing to do as stock for stock it flows more. To me tho, it just wasnt vey cost effective, there are better ways to spend money that make good hp than to do that swap. Look at Brent Rau, he is in the 7's on a 2g head. Yah, I know he has the deep pockets and a race shop at his disposal, but, even with the race shop and those deep pockets, he runs the 2g head. He has well over 700 horse too.

thanks for all the input. it looks like im just going to work on my 7 bolt and build it up, and if it walks it does, what are you gonna do. thanks guys
