Just bought a 97' GST Spyder, it has a fake greddy bov, and exhaust, and that's it.. What's the benefit of adding a FMIC? Boost controller? Timer? Air Intake? more reliability?... If i get an FMIC do i have to get anything else done for it to work, or not dirupt anything?..

The only real reason to get a fmic is when you upgrade your turbo to a 16G or bigger and start to run more boost than your stock turbo can push. As for your stock turbo yes a manual boost controller will be good for you dont run it to high I would say 15 P.S.I and thats it until you upgrade, You dont neccessarly need a turbo timer just stay in the car for 2 minutes and then turn it off it allows the turbo to cool down after driving well the oil i should say saves it from gumming up but this does take alot of time. So you should focus on getting yourself a boost gauge, boost controller, hard piping for your side mount intercooler if you dont plan on upgrading your turbo just yet, and then upgrade your fuel injectors to 550cc and a 190 fuel pump only if you dont plan on upgrading your turbo right now this will save you some headaches down the road. a logger is gonna be one of your best friends because you will be able to watch everything that yuour motor is doing and this is essentila as to what you you are gonna do with your boost and everything hope this heloped ya out a littel bit

Make sure you recirculate that BOV. It may sound cool but it will cause a massive boost leak.
A great website to view is VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions
It will teach you almost everything you need to know to lightly mod and fix your dsm.
FMICs are for cooler, more dense air. In simple terms, the cooler the intake charge, the better.
A boost controller is to up the boost. However do not worry about this yet, make SURE your car is maintained and up to par. It takes a lot of work to make a car ready for modding. Do a timing belt kit. Change all the fluids (trans, oil, etc)
Change plugs, Plug wires, gaskets, check for boost leaks all of that.
Turbo timers are really just a toy. You pull your key out, and the car stays running for a certain amount of time to let oil and coolant flow through the turbo to cool it down.
If you get a FMIC you'd have to get intercooler pipes and of course couplers with it.
Seriously, don't touch modding yet.
Figure out how to do timing, go ahead and do that.
Make sure to fix any other problems you may have with the car, if you start modding, the little problems will usually turn into bigger issues and usually become more hard to deal with.

Anymore questions please feel free to pm me.

Sidenote; it's against the rules to tell someone to just search, and you guys know this. I've said it before, if you don't want to help, then stay out of the newbie forum and stay in the hangout.

gahhh you beat me to the punch :( but i do agree with what you said...especially people telling others to use search and call eachother noobs and crap. nothing gets accomplished that way.

but to the OP, here's what I would do: do the maintenane first...the timing belt and pulleys (rockauto.com has a decently priced kit), change the plugs and wires, change the oil for the engine (as usual) and the transmission, and it's (make sure they're gapped between .028-.032) always a good idea to flush the radiator. if you know how to get around working on cars, everything can be done by yourself (with the exception of the timing belt).

next, I would do the exhaust, then add gauges (atleast boost and a wideband air fuel ratio gauge). next, probably a good intake and filter. then, i would get hard intercooler piping all around and upgrade the blow off valve (the stock one just doesnt cut it) in the process. when you are replacing the piping, it's a good idea to clean out and off the intercooler. after that, you can add on a boost controller. at this point, you should have a car that solidly gives you a bit more umph safely. after this point, its upgrading the fuel pump, injectors, turbo, then adding on a fmic.

An extra piece of information would be to only get OEM parts on the timing side. Nothing less. No point in risking your engine on internals on saving a few bucks.

Re-circulate?.. How and why? (this is why I'm in the newb section) Just getting into this hobby... I like it so far though!

FMIC=longer lasting engine.? w/out upgrading turbo... If I do get a FMIC, will I have to re-tune the engine or turbo? Is it strictly just cooling the air? Prior turbo or engine?..

Suspension: How many inches can I delete from stock springs w/aftermartket springs i.e.. Tannabe, Tein, Skunk 2 before tread/rideability/steering becomes a problem? Or does it a create problem from get go?...

OMG...... sounds like you are in for something..

Try doing some more research on Turbo's, Turbocharged Cars and More importantly, DSM's...

yea had a pocket logger for my 1g then got a 2g but apparently pocket logger has discontinued there obdII loggers : ( i found it better to use a palm logger instead of a laptop more convenient

evo 3 16 g is a good turbo :) man you missed out on the deal forced performance was having on these it was awesome :D

Gates racing makes GREAT belts. But the PCI kits are also made by Gates and the belts ARE the EXACT same belts, they even say gates on them. They are also WAY cheaper.

If you want to lower with the stock struts I'd go with the eibach that are a 1 inch drop. But honestly, I'd do a camber kit before lowering at all, but 1 inch shouldn't hurt too much.

As for recirculating, if you don't your air isn't metered properly because you don't have a blow off valve stock, you have a bypass valve. That means you need to get a GM maf and a translator of some sort to properly vent to atmosphere, if you don't your car will run like crap.

To recirculate it you buy the hose and attach it to your blow off valve then to your intake. You could also ditch the POS knock off that will leak and buy a used 1g BOV here that can hold a lot of boost if crushed properly and will hold up uncrushed easily at 15-16 PSI. They typically go for around 25-30 bucks here.

You don't want a MBC with out a logger because you don't know when your car will knock. Every car is different and with out being able to check for knock you don't need to be modding.

The upgrade path on here is also extremely helpful if you haven't looked at it already.
