I've done my research on turbocharging cars for many years. Finally the money is at a flow in which I can afford it but I have to build up my car's parts before i can do so. I plan on turbocharging my car but I would like to start building up the car before i throw on the turbo. The question I have comes down to engine compression ratios.
If I were to rebuild my engine with 8:8:1 compression ratio pistonsand use the engine without the turbo for an extended amount of time, will the car run right or will this cause unnecessary wear/problems to my car?

the car will run right and it would be a good break in, but it will be slow cause the air is hardly being compressed. and i would say try for 8.5:1 thats supposedly the best compression for going turbo.

If i were using the stock ecu in conjunction with the 8:8:1 compression ratio pistons, would the timing create knock or anything like that?

no you well not need to do any adjustment to timing. as stated on the first post. you well notice the car is alittle more slugish because your not compressing as much air and gas. i say you well lose 10 to 15 hp buy lowering the comp. ratio with out the turbo but you well gain way more once you turbo it. now when you get ready to get a turbo your goin to want a big 16g. a 14b will do the job. but if you want to get the most out of your 8.8:1 go with the big 16g @15psi which well :rocks:

Also, when i'm getting the internals redone, I'm doing up the cylinder head with turbo grind camshafts, valves, valve strings, etc (basically the works). Again, will any of that conflict with anything or make the car any less driveable until the turbo goes on?

The head work should be fine. Most of the thing one can do to the head could benefit your performance with or without a turbo. The only turbo-specific modification is the camshafts. I don't know the specifics on which particular camshafts your getting, but the either way, the grind will not be so radical that the car will not un-drivable until the turbo goes in. I'd be impressed if you noticed much of a difference at all.

Beautiful. You guys are extremely helpful. I have a great mechanical understanding of engines and turbo systems, but lack the experience to understand tuning. That solves the questions off the top of my head. If any other questions arise, I will be quick to post them.

ANother question has come up. If I were to do the internals with the Howell stroker kit, would the timimg need to be adjusted for the longer stroke?

You mentioned you did a lot of research. I also have a 420a that I would like to put a turbo on. Could you give me an overview of what direction you are heading to shorten my learn time? I would really appreciate it!

Depending on how much the engine rebuild and everything costs me, I'm either going with the Hahn Stage 1 and later upgrading it to the stage 2 or just going for the stage 2.

Anybody have an answer for my question regarding stroker kits:
If I were to do the internals with the Howell stroker kit, would the timimg need to be adjusted for the longer stroke?
