So I know the cam gears aren't perfect. They're close but with a real straight edge they never line up precisely. They're off just a smidge. Now i've always timed my cars where the inside tick marks are above my straight edge. Should the middle marks be a little below my straight edge or a little above?
 
It's not that hard getting the marks lined up perfectly, but it has to be done for proper operation - you're gonna have to work on it more.

..no 2nd guessing, or "just about right" is allowed.

All 4 marks will not line up. You want to focus on the inner 2. A good reference point is you should be able to look right behind the marks and line up the ticks with the valve cover gasket line.

The outer two marks will be higher by a bit than the inner two.
