my friend is looking at a 95 gs and the owner says that the power steering belt keeps falling off we asked him if it was just the tensioner he said he had bought a new one, put it in and the belt still falls off he took it to his mechanic and he said that its something with the crankshaft. i cant think of why it would be the crankshaft other than a stripped belt pully bolt or somehting like that... can someone please clearify this problem and could something else be wrong with it other than what the mechanic diagnosed?

I might be wrong will have to contact a dealer to verify but back when I fixed voyagers they use to sell a bracket to go over the power steering pully for this reason. Something about them not being lined up over time and slippin off. As far as I know DSMs have this same issue.

Could be the harmonic balancer, they are known for going bad on the turbo models, mine was around 100 dollars to replace. If the crank shaft gear is stripped then it would just be a simple matter of replacing it, which would also include doing the timing belt. Or possibly rethreading it with a helicoli kit. That's about the only thing I could think of.

My best friend had the same issue. It would pop off when he would launch or revving hi. It had to do with the position of the pulley(angle). I will find out from him what the actual cause is. I know it was a known issue that mitsubishi knew.

edit: updated pulley from mitsubishi. That is from my friend. It would bend over time and slip off under load.

I remember now, LOL. Its been a while since I had my GS. It is the tensioner pulley. Mitsubishi told me they make an "updated" tensioner pulley to fix this problem. I think it should have been a recall, but they don't think so. I think they wanted $115 for it. Mine would always come off when I was really getting on it. It came off on me like 10 different times, it was so irritating. I was going to buy the updated tensioner pulley, but ended up just selling it to get an AWD Talon. :hellyeah:

Lmfao I saw this post and started laughing. Like I just pictured someone saying "Power steering belt falls off?" like in a way that would be shocking and kind of saying "Are you ####ing kidding me?". Lol.

i actually have the same exact problem with my 97 rs. Took it to 3 different mechanics and still no one could figure it out.

Are the two pulleys aligned with one another - the WP pulley and the PS pulley?

You could have a slightly bent bracket that holds the PS pump on.

..or your WP pulley isn't aligned too well since the outer PS pulley is separate than the WP pulley when doing the WP replacement.

You also could have some PS pump torque flexing when doing hard launches which would also throw the pulley alignment off since the pump suddenly has to go under high RPMS which it wasn't designed to do in the first place along with sudden pressure buildup within the pump causing shaft rotation resistance.
