Okay, Im doing this for a friend, and we were wondering if this sounds like crank walk? The car sat around for 3 years while he worked on it and installed alot of parts. After he got it running for the first time since then, it made this awfull noise. Sounded like the piston or rod is banging aound or something?? We know its coming from cylinder #1. Anyway, thanks for the help..

More information would be helpful. How many miles are on the engine? Sounds like it could be rod knock, or piston slap, though, my speakers on my laptop kind of sucks. It could also be a spun rod bearing also. I don't think crank walk would make that noise. I would drop the oil pan and at least wiggle the the rods. There shouldn't be any noticeable play. I had and engine that spun two rod bearings. One was so bad that it melted the two halves together and the other one all I had to do was wiggle the rod and I could feel a lot of play in the rod.

Did he prime the engine before he started it?

Its what we were afraid of??

Now, would you want to replace the bearings and rebuild the motor? Or 2, if you had a 6bolt laying around that has 150psi compression, swap it in his 98 Gsx? I say its better off going with the 6 bolt.. Thanks for the help

The engine has 76k and my friend took it to an Auto shop because my buddy could not get it to start after the car sat for 3 years. Turned out the car need a fuel pump, and when the shop got it started they told my buddy about the noise. They said it sounded like a bad rod bearing in #1 cylinder. Not sure on the priming of the engine.. The shop had comtrole of all that.

Well, a 6 bolt conversion is pretty easy. And if you have one laying around and it's good shape, there is no reason not to drop it in. You can always rebuild the 7 bolt while it's out. Three years of no run time can reek havoc on engine bearings. Especially in high moisture areas.

Well, you and I are not to far from each other. A friend of mine has ALOT of DSM parts over flowing in his shed..:D Along with a couple 6 bolt engine's.

We were planning on just swapping to 6 bolt and building on his 7 for the winter and going from ther. He was just curiouse as to what that sounded like and to let the Dsm community aware of another crank walk FATALITY!!:(

Well, if you are going to dump a 6 bolt in. I would suggest that he just rebuild one of his other 6 bolts instead, that way you don't have to convert it back to run a 7 bolt if he were to rebuild the 7 bolt. I mean, the 7 bolt is a good engine, but the 6 bolt is better.

I guess this thread is closed and answered?? Either CW or spun rod bearing.. Either way his car is getting a 6 bolt. We just wanted some insight on the strange noise that neither one of us has ever heard befor. Thanks for the help fella's

good idea! i cant tell what it is from the video, but its not good LOL

Crank-walk cannot be diagnosed over the internet with a video like that. The ONLY way to know for sure is to measure the end-play of the crankshaft. So until you do that, enough with crank-walk.

It could be rod-knock, it could be piston slap. Who knows until you start taking it upon yourself to figure it out. While you're checking for end-play, you'll be able to check for a thrown rod/bearing. Tear the oil pan off and figure it out.

did your friend by any chance install new rods himself over those 3 years and forget to redo the crank or jsut got new rod bearings and never turned the crank, did he even use grease to build it if he even did build it. a new motor needs that installation grease for its initial startup when its brand spanking new.

Lol, does he have any extra fans? I was just going to put my A/C condenser fan in and found out that the fins are melted :ohdamn:
I have one for ya. Pm me with an offer.

No, he never rubuilt the engine. The day he got the car he put 20 miles on her and it was running strong. Thats why we never tore into the engine. Then it was on jack stands.I guess what ever it was, the car sat for 3 years befor even a start up, it had no fluids in it and the moisture got everywhere and you all know what happens then??:( He plans on having the 6 bolt in in 2 weeks so thats the next project.

That noise is even louder in real life. Makes you wanna slap yo mamma..LOL Thanksagin guys
