Possible Starter Problem???

Ok I know my starter was going bad. It would take a few times to start it sometimes, and continually has been getting worse. I was just leaving a stop sign going about 25mph when my car immdeiately sputtered, backfired, then shut off. I can turn the engine over when my starter allows me to but it won't crank up. I have spark, timing belt is still on, all lights still work so battery is good. You can smell gas on the plugs, but they are not soaked. Anyone know what this could be? Any help at all will be appreciated.

Any ideas of what this could be. I really don't want to take the car to a dealership to get fixed, but I am getting frustrated.

Does the starter turn slow like the battery is weak even when it's not? If it does, then you need to replace the starter motor brushes.

It turns at regular speeds. It feels like it kicks back if someone understands what I mean by that. It did pretty good today and didn't kick back. The car turned over fine but wouldn't crank. After I tried it I took the spark plugs out, and I didn't smell one bit of gas on them. I checked the fuel pump, and it kicks on.

I don't understand what you mean by "kicks back", but if you're not getting fuel you need to check the basics. Check the ECU for fault codes, check the MPI Relay, the MPI Fuse, put a NOID light on your injectors to see if they're getting signal, etc, etc.

Found the problem. The crankshaft position sensor is bad. The new sensor comes in Monday. I'll post back to let everyone know if it does the trick.

It worked. Car runs like a dream now.
