Passing E-Check w/ Apex'i N1

I'm looking at buyign a 92 AWD Laser, and it has an Apex'i N1 Full 3" exhaust with no cat. I lvie in an e-check county and I need to know what I'd have to do to get it to pass. The owner has the stock exhaust system still that he'll give me. Problem is, I'm a newbie when it comes to working on these cars. I live an hour away from Buschur, so taking it there is an option. Also, I have a brother in law mechanic (in training). What are my options? What parts would I need to buy, and how hard is it to install w/o a lift?

Also, what tools would I need to just take out the N1 and put the stocker back in? Never done this before...

Get a regular mechanic's tool kit from any auto parts store.

You need to know what kind of check they do. If they just look to see if your Check engine light is on or not, you can get an o2 simulator from www.o2simulator.com or do the secondary o2 mod (check tech guide for more information).

Another option is for you to sell the N1 downpipe and get a RRE www.roadraceengineering.com dowpipe and Cat. It will bolt on to the N1 and you'll pass emissions with it, if they bend down and look for a cat under the car.

What if I just wanted to unbolt the Apexi N1, put on the stock exhaust, get it checked, come home, and put the Apexi back on? Would that be a huge hassle? I'd like to minimize the cost if possible, but I'm not afraid to spend money.

You could do the swap to stock, but it depends on how often the emissions testing is. If it is just once a year, and you want to do the swap every year, then you don't need the cat and downpipe from RRE.

Odd. It's quite possible my work is blocking the site and not giving me the normal "Denied" screen =)

I suppose it depends on how hard it is to switch the exhausts. How time consuming would it be? Emissions is once every 2 years I think, even so, if it was 1 year apart I wouldn't mind doing it.

I've never done it before though. What all is involved? Just unbolting the current and rebolting the replacement?

Unbolting, rebolting and removing and installing one o2 sensor (the rear one).

You turn it counter-clockwise to take it out and turn it clockwise to put it back in.

If I did want to spend the money, and save some time, do you think Buschur would be able to fit their 3" Highflow Cat into the Apex'i N1?

It'd cost me a bit, but I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.

I have no idea if it'll be a direct fit. You can always take the cat's flange off and weld an Apex'i flange so it bolts to the N1. RRE is the only company I know of that makes downpipes and Cats that bolt on to the N1 cat backs. Since you can't see their website, I pasted their info here.

RRE Race Down Pipes
These down pipes are mandrel bent and have a large diameter flex section. They are built to bolt directly to an Espelier, RSR or Apex N-1, RS, WS or Dunk exhaust systems only. If you have another brand system with a small first section, you can modified your exhaust to fit by cutting out the small first section of your exhaust. Then you will need to weld in a 3" piece of pipe and one of our flanges. Just ask for a free flange when you order the DP. High flow catalytic converters can be added to the down pipes to make them "more" street legal.

Our DPs have a 2 1/2" stainless steel first bend with a 2 1/2" stainless steel flex section. They then expand to 3" right after the flex section right under the oil pan area. Why start out at 2 1/2"? If you are running on the stock O2 sensor housing, even ported it is 2 1/2" inside diameter. When the exhaust gasses are hot, they flow better, 2 1/2" is plenty for the first 12". As the gasses cool , bigger helps. By going to 3" after the flex section, we allow this expansion and also allow for better clearance at the front where room is tight. From there they are a full 3" back to the Apex 3" flange with 14 gauge aluminized steel piping. We had some Apexi flanges laser cut out of thick 1/2" steel for a good seal and fit.

These down pipes (and all performance DPs) break every known Federal law known to man if used on a public highway. While having a working high flow cat will allow you to pass a tail pipe test in even California, federal law does not permit replacing a working cat. Also, no emissions testing has been done on the DPs so they are not certified as being legal for any street use. Be a responsible citizen and use them on the race track only

If you have the upgraded EVO O2 sensor housing, order the EVO style DP. It comes with the larger EVO bolt pattern and is angled correctly for those cars running the EVO O2 housing

Thanks for the cut and paste. I kidn of figured it wouldn't bolt on, but I was more wondering if they could modify it to fit (at my expense of course ). Oh well, I'll worry about it more once I actually get the car. Thanks for your help, definately appreciate it.

Hate to bring this thread back up but does anybody know if RRE downpipes bolt right up to your stock O2 housing? I like to get this downpipe for my Apexi N1 catback but i don't know if it will bolt up to my stock O2 housing? Also, i'd like to get the downpipe with the test pipe but i understand that i got to get some O2 sensor eliminator kit. So i don't get the check engine light. Can someone please explain to me where this kit goes on the car and how it is installed and exactly what it does? I think i have seen one that was like a little black rectangle box with like three wires coming out of it with circle washer things on the end of each wire. Thanks a lot

Yes, the RRE downpipe will bolt right up to your stock o2 housing.

I like to get this downpipe for my Apexi N1 catback but i don't know if it will bolt up to my stock O2 housing?

You can also get the the Apex'i N1 downpipe which will also bolt right up to your stock o2 housing. It is not stainless steel like RRE's downpipe but it is coated with high temp paint.

Also, i'd like to get the downpipe with the test pipe but i understand that i got to get some O2 sensor eliminator kit.

Why get a downpipe AND a test pipc?? Just get the Apex'i N1 downpipe or RRE's long downpipe which eliminates the cat/test pipe/

Depends what they check when they do your emissions test. If they just see if the OBDII puts out a code, then the o2 simulator won't put out the code. If they test the exhaust gases, you won't pass it. If they look under the car and not see a cat, you won't pass it.

No it won't screw your car, all it does it not put the code. The second o2s only purpose is to tell if your cat is working, the second o2 does not have anything to do with fuel.

No your stock cat will not fit with the RRE short downpipe and the N1, but RRE does sell 3" cats that bolt on to their downpipes and the Apex'i N1

I have the Apexi N1 catback with the stock downpipe and cat. I plan on going with the Apexi N1 downpipe. I'm in Florida there are no emissions testing here.

EDIT: After doing some research I found out that Apexi N1 downpipes for GSXs/TSi AWDs are not 2.5", they are 60mm (2.36") and then expand to 80mm. I'll be going with RRE's downpipe.
