Took out my pass spindle/hub/axle for a clutch install, and I gotta replace the outer cv boot on the axle since I found it to be ripped. However, the axle is stuck in the hub pretty damn good...Any suggestions on getting it out? Heating? Pressing? Anything? I really don't feel like trucking to a junkyard to find a new spindle and axle assy (which I had to do for the driver's side axle about a month back) so any tips or tricks would be really appreciated.

put the nut on the axle end of axle flush with the end of the nut and tap it with a rubber hammer or a small hammer if ya dont got a rubber one. thats how I have always done it. Hope it helps ya out.

If it was anything like mine, your not going to get it out without damaging the axle end, or the hub. Take it to a welder and have him cut it out. I had to do that, and it took him probably 30 minutes with the cutting torch. Charged me $20.

i just dealt with the exact same thine on my driverside. No amount of tapping with a rubber hammer...let alone a 20lb sledge hammer made it budge. So after mushrooming the end of the axle...i decided to take it to get pressed out....NOPE...20 ton press didnt even make it quiver. ended up cutting the hub...and what ever else we could to get it outa there. 300 bucks later i got it back together...new hub and axle. This time i used anti sieze on it!!!

Just what I was afraid of...I have a bad feeling I'm going junkyard hunting for a hub/spindle assy...Quick question. Do all 2g DSM's have the same hub/spindle, regardless of turbo/na/fwd/awd?

Thanks,
Scott

Man, I've never had a problem getting my front axles out of the hub. I can push them out with my thumb. But that's probably because I've had them out so many times pulling the tranny. In fact, it's out right now for a clutch disc. The rears are a different story.

Before cutting and ruining stuff, just go buy the inner boot as well. Take the inside part of the axle apart. It's just a E-clip holding the "tripod" on. Pop it off and slip the new boot the whole way down the axle over the outer joint. Then slip the new inner boot on and put the tripod thing back on. Done! :thumb:

I suggest getting the hub assembly new. They can be had for $75 at Advance, or $128 for the better brand which I bought. I bought two for $50 each at a junkyard and they went bad in two months. Don't be afraid to indulge in tons of anti-seize

I sware the bearings weld themselves to the axle and hub. I had a shop with a 20ton press try to get the axle shaft out only to break the damn hub.

Advance has new hubs? Nifty, I will keep that in mind when I do the pass side bearing.

I see that Advance has new hubs, but where can I find a new knuckle assembly? Wouldn't that also need to be changed?

The hub is bolted to the spindal with 4x 17mm bolts from the back. Another suggestion I have had to end up doing is go to advance. Its 75 bucks to "rent" a hub puller. It bolts to you hub just like the wheel does and then has a bolt to push out the cv axle. I had one car that it took me 3 hours my my IR 800ft FW torque impact to get out and it still needed alittle assistance from the 20lb sledge. But when your done with the tool, you get to return it an get your money back.

Advance here doesn't rent tools, and no puller was about pull my hub out. The cutting torch was the way to do it.

To get a knuckle you would have to visit a junkyard, but mine came out okay.

Sledge/Puller combo is usually the only way if it's that frozen. The constant pulling/shock is what eventually will break it free. I just spent 8 hours under my car replacing a clutch disc. Woohoo! It's done.

If Advance dont rent tools try Auto Zone b/c that's who rents them here. Just figured I throw that out their.

Just don't be like me..... it was 1am and my axels wouldn't come off when I was pulling my engine..... I kinda just bent them straight down so I could pull the engine axles attached. I don't recommend ;)

well... if its frozen and the axle is still good. Why don't you leave it in there untill you have to replace it? I have found that a good penetrating oil, and a propane torch, combined with an Air Hammer will do the trick. My 2 cents. Good Luck!

Same thing I did, they eventually just broke :thumb:

I tried that only to strip the bolt out. :( My friend broke the hub free at the CV joint. Then we heated the shaft, and pounded it out. Had to cut the end apart where I mushroomed it. Took me all damn day to get that thing apart and put back together.
