painting my car, should I take off all of the moldings and bumpers?

I found some aluminum color rustoleum today at my house and Im going to paint my car with it. I have a few questions. Should I remove all of the moldings to paint them separately or should I leave them on the car? What kind of primer do I need to use for this car? I am putting on a blue bumper with my silver car. What do I need to spray on bare metal? Do I use light coats of zinc for the 50 dollar paint job?

dont know the exact name, but i know you can get it at autozone. shouldn't be no more than ten bucks.

What do you need to spray on bare metal? Let me see hmm a sh!* load of body filler and high build primer. Dont tell me you sanded the car down to bare metal, all you should of done was sand it down until the paint did not shine any more.

I sanded the rust spots down to bare metal. I know my brother painted his car with the paint shop paint and he used zinc on the bare metal. He probably still has some more. Should I use zince with rustoleum paint?

Yes, remove the hood and bumper covers, and tape off the rest. If you're doing the door jambs as well, I'd probably even remove the doors and do those seperately.

Thanks. Im thinking I need to primer everything first too. Is there a primer from Rustoloeum that I should use?

First you should put on a epoxy primer to protect the metal of rust and then use a Primer surfacer after that.

You could probaly get epoxy primer at napa, just go over to napa and talk to them about useing it with the paint, and i am sure they would tell you what would be the best route to go when painting.

Im sure they know nothing about outdoor paint. I was wondering about the moldings, Mine are cracking on the inside which makes them look like they have dents in them. I was wondering if anyone knows where to get new ones or if I should try to fix them if its even possible.

I'm pretty sure you use self-etching primer on bare metal. But for the rest of the car I would just use standard primer. I did mine with duplicolor grey primer from Advance. Then you want to sand the primer real good with some 400. And your also going to want to disassemble the car as much as possible. Most deffinately take off the head/taillights and bumpers. And yes, also take off the moldings.

Cool. I already have the rear bumper and lights disassembled, the hood is off, the motor has been out, I am also replacing the quarter panel and Im thinking of adding an article on replacing it when after I replace it. Some of the moldings are off not too much to do but replace the quarter panel and sand.

Not the spray paint, the gallon of outdoor paint. Research 50 dollar paint jobs. This paint job is going to cost me 12 bucks for just sand paper and mineral spirits, because I found the paint laying in the house, the same color I want too.

Maybe, but Im spraying it on so I shouldn't be that hard.

Yea but if you ever decide you want a real paint job after that it is going to cost more money to take off that out door paint, i say you should get some cheap car paint it would be less work and it is car paint not house paint.

Give the cheap Dupli-color paint shop paint a try. It's pre-mixed, but you can thin it out more if needed.

Sand the clear off and paint primer on it to cover up the brown. Then I think a sealer goes on then the actually paint then the clear. I think anyway.

Ill try the paint I have one my brothers wrecked fender and see how it looks. If I dont like it Ill get the paint you are talking about. How much is the paint that you are talking about? Btw this paint was never opened.

You really do not need the primer unless you are pulling out dents and filling them in with body filler and such.
