Has anyone painted the 97-99 GS 5 spoke rims? I searched the forums and everyone's painted the RS and GSX rims, but not the GS. :( If anyone has, can you post links, pics, w/e. I hope to do this next week. Thanks.

OK I finally faced my fears and finished them black with a polished lip.

looks hot man :thumb: i just did mine as well with duplicolor gunmetal. i was going to leave a lip but just painted them solid. I think it looks a lot better IMO. I will post pics too as soon as I can :dsm:

Yea, thanks man. I was gonna do gunmetal with the polished lip but wal-mart only had silver and bronze wheel coating. So I just did black...

Looking forward to the pics. :thumb:

Im thinking about painting mine white, i guess if i do it and it is dumb looking, im screwed..

Lol, it won't be if you do it right. The hardest thing is stripping all the crappy GS paint off. White with the polished lip looks sexy. :thumb:

How do you prep the wheels? What do you use to remove the silver? And are these just the Duplicolor spray cans from autozone or what not? This sounds like an interesting and easy idea but not something to mess up.

Autozone sells wheels paint in silver gunmetal and white, and they have a clear coat also. I believe its made by duplicolor but Its "for wheels." I am acutally in the process of painting some 17s right this moment... Just waiting for the silver to dry and then clear coating them all. The silver is really nice and metallic.

It was like 4 bucka a can.

Oh and you dont have to strip the paint off of the wheels to have paint stick to it... Scuff the paint and yo can prime them if there is bare metal showing otherwise paint away and make sure you clear coat them

I wanna do that! I think Jet Black and a polished lip would look hot on my white 1g. How hard is it to mask off the lip? Thats my only concern, that i wouldnt get that perfectly round.

It wasn't very hard to mask off the lip. I masked it off to the edge of the spoke, then took newspaper and did the rest. :)

When using paint stripper to get the original coat off the rims, will it hurt the tires if any gets on them? I'll prolly mask them off, but I think stripper would eat through tape  Just wondering

u guys posted all of these, but i wanted to know if these are painted, or powder coated, cuz i heard powder coat comes out nicly as well... and my rims r crome 5 spoke gst rims, would does work with paint or powdercoat?

No no, strip the whole coat of paint off and then after thats done mask off the lip. If you strip the whole rim without sanding youll see that its a beautiful aluminum finish underneath and you dont want paint to stay over that. Stripper is very acidic, I often got some on my hands and had to wash it off because it burnt so much. If you get a little on the tire, no worries. Just don't pour it on there in mass amounts hoping it wont eat through. :p

And GST Spyder, I used 3 coats Krylon Primer, 3 coats Krylon Gloss Black, 2 coats Krylon Clear coat. Powdercoating, as usual would look much better.
