oversized bearings?

After receiving a FREE rebuild kit from SlowBoy, yes free, its a long story, didn't get to keep it but, anyway...i noticed that the bearings weren't standard sized. i forget if they were main bearings or rod bearings, but they were oversized. Never heard of such a thing, and i don't quite understand what the purpose of this would be...? can someone fill me in? thanks

When you grind a crank, something's gotta take up the space. More bearing material is the usual choice.
