Hello, I did a search and found nothing, wasn't sure where to post this but though this might work.
So I just bought a '93 Talon AWD with a JDM engine and a bunch of bolt-ons. I was driving the car and it overheated on me. First problem was that the coolant was a light brown color (not oil). I then made sure it was not the fan and it wasn't because it was working (pulling through). My next step was to flush the coolant, as I started to do that I noticed that it was cold at the bottom of the radiator and hot at the top. It is not clogged though as water freely flows through it. I also noticed that the engine oil was very watery, probably coolant in it (hard to tell, remember that coolant was brown). Exhaust had water spraying out of it. I right away though blown head gasket. Did a compression test and got 150psi all across. Now I am stumped, any ideas guys.
P.S. Someone said something about water pumps being a common problem. Any way to check it with out pulling it off?

you can take the pully and belt off the water pump, (its like 4 bolts) then rotate the water pump's "wheel" to see if there is any binding. make sure it rotates freely and easily. good luck. i had a similar problem to you and it turned out my factory oil cooler (water cooled housing) went bad and i was experienceing the same symptoms.

The factory oil cooler has a big problem with blowing the seals. The warm on top cold on bottom is usually caused from a stuck thermostat or failed waterpump. I would check to see if you are leaking any oil from around the oil filter and change the oil and coolant and run the car at idle for a little while again to check the water in the oil again. Could have just been a one time deal or you could have something more serious.

Make sure you open the throttle plate when doing the test otherwise compression can bounce off it and enter another cylinder to give the impression the gasket it ok.

I will try that

I have had an oil/coolant mixture before. It was the oil cooler for me. I believe I tightened it too much which crushed it. I switched over to the 90 style external oil cooler setup and replaced the HG. No more mixing issues. :)

Hey guys, how is this for an idea. Maybe the coolant is leaking in to the intake manifold and that would explain everything, has anybody had this happen?

No its not leaking into your intake manifold. Most likely you popped the HG, or the seal in the oil filter housing went bad. I can't see any other likely causes of this.

It could be leaking into the intake manifold via the fiav. But that wouldnt explain the cold coolant on the bottom and hot coolant on top (at least not that i know). Id say check the following:

-oil filter housing (24mm deep socket to see if it's not loose)
- thermostat
- intake manifold since you brought it up.

Good luck,

T
