overboosting 25 psi

heres a pic of how it was setup, the second pic is how i have it now. the first way i had it i had the blowoff line in a tee with the j-pipe line and the wastegate line. the way it is now is j-pipe to wastegate, blowoff to intake mani. it hasent boost creeped yet but it didnt do it before till two days later:rolleyes:

Definately keep it how you have it now. I'm not sure why it was hooked up the other way before, that's way off...The BOV line wasn't even going to the intake manifold? How long was it hooked up the first way?

As for the 2g MAS, I wouldn't buy it for that price. Look around if you really want one. Also, I wouldn't get it yet unless you are able to compensate (tune) for the higher airflow you'd get with it. Other people may argue with me, but I'm paranoid about having my car run well and safely.

the guy i bought the car from had it run that way but had the stock bcs in there too. tune? you mean like with a safc and a datalogger right? well im gonna buy a safc 2 soon and a pocket logger soon after just because i know ill need it soon so no big deal. my buddy said for $125 he will sell me the sensor itself, a hard intake pipe and a k&n filter and the wiring harness so i can just plug it in and go. sounds like a good deal to me!

I thought he was selling just the sensor for that price. It sounds better now with the intake and filter. I would wait and do the logger and SAFC before putting it on though.

EDIT: Noticed that you're local to me while I'm at school. (Miami) Are there ever any meets in the area?

OMG

So this car ran for how long with a non-functioning BOV?

How much shaft play does the turbo have? You could have some bigger problems here.

Ya, I was a little behind in the story when I mentioned boost creep....And yes, porting the wastegate path is the best way to go, but a cut divider sure doesnt hurt...

Seriously, if you pass on the 2g mas setup, PM me the guys info...Im looking for the exact setup to upgrade from my 1g mas...I run a safc, wideband, logger tho so I know I can tune for it....

I wouldnt be so worried about hitting fuel cut...At 25psi on stock fuel/timing settings, of course your going to hit fuel cut, the ecu is seeing so much airflow it is forced to cut fuel...But at 16psi with a hacked mas, you should be fine...I ran 17psi with a Zero-d out SAFC and stock 1g mas, and I never hit fuel cut...Now I run 18psi with an SAFC at -15ish so fuel cut shouldnt be too much of an issue for me either, the ecu is seeing -15% less airflow....

Yep, the biggest problem with the previous setup isn't really boost control, it's compressor surge. Further more, I don't see how you can get all out boost either unless you had some serious boost leaks after the compressor housing, I strongly suggest that you perform a boost leak test ASAP.

Are you kidding me? Didn't we JUST have a big discussion about this? A cut divider does hurt, a lot. Its a gheeeeeetto hack. You might as well just leave the stock exhaust on, that controls boost creep too.

Uhh, I dono, Im usually on Talk (chicago_dsm)...But, anyways, wtf? Didnt know it was a 'ghetto hack'....So far it seemed to cure creep on the setups of everyone I know that runs an internally gated turbo...I just bought a fully ported 2g o2 housing with the divider ported out and removed....sooo, it would be nice to know this information on why its bad...Or at least a link to the discussion? I did a search and got links to old threads Ive already read, which say nothing about being a hack...

I don't have time to search for the other topic I have to get to work, if I remember correctly it had "undivided housing" in the topic title and was in the Newbie Section. I'll give you a quick lesson.

Think about WHY it controls boost creep, because no one is disputing the fact that it does. It controls boost creep by making extremely high post turbine backpressure, just like the stock exhaust does. This lowers flow through the turbine and poof.... no more boost creep. Its just as much of a ghetto hack has turbine clipping (which destroys turbine efficiency) or trying to run your a/c to cool your intake. Those housings are divided for a reason. Be glad we have divided housings and O2 housings stock, its one of the things Mitsu actually got right.

well that explains why the car didnt over boost before i got my full 3in exhaust, non working BOV? when i reran the lines the line i had to run the blowoff to the intake mani was a litttle to small i i just shoved it on there cause i didnt have any bigger vaccumm lines at the moment, and its been falling off. and yesterday a cobalt:tease: tried to race me, ofcourse blew his doors off without even useing all 8psi im running now:notgood: . but anyways when i shifted i noticed no whittishtistish, i was like uh oh, so when i got back home i checked it and the line fell off the intake mani again and it wont fit on it at all now, so i pluged the hole on the intake mani and drove the car around the block, it did a little whitish but not as loud as it was before and it only would do if it i boosted all 8 pounds. im broke for a couple more days and i need to drive the car to work(2 miles) im not gonna boost it either (duh) but will this hurt anything? my turbos fine, no shaft play(what a releaf) but now im all paranoid about hurting my turbo if my bov insnt working right. let me know tonight if ya guys can so i can know if i can drive it to work in the morning!

Based on that outstanding quality written sound clip, I would say the BOV isn't even working when its "working". That sounds more like surge. BOVs don't repeat any noises. Its just a pshhhhhhhh or cheeeeeeeew or chirp or a confusing mixture of many strange noises if you have an SSQV.

But any repeated, pulsing type noise is more than likely compressor surge.

I hope that Cobalt wasn't an SS or that kid really can't drive. We rape lightly modded DSMs in my friends Redline all the time.:sneaky:

ok, i managed to get some change and bought the vaccumm line, my blow offs back now. so the whitishtishthish isnt normal?, i have a crushed 1g bov, ive never had one before so i just thought thats what they sounded like. if its doing that than i still have compresser surge? i fixed the over boost problim so whys it still surging then?oh and it was a ss cobalt but it wasnt supercharged it was just the 2.4 motor. but i raced a completly stock supercharged cobalt in my completly stock old tsi fwd and we were even the whole time untill i hit 4th then i started to pull away from him a little bit:thumb: :dsm:

i just drove the cararound the block and the bov sounds like a bird chirp but it like "chirperperperp" i dont know its hard to describe i can try to make a video of it later and well see what it does then

Does it sound like a flutter or a sound that cycles back and forth, as opposed to a sustained woooosh, or pshhhhh noise?
