the other night coming home from work the car wouldnt boost anything, i took it home checked vacum lines and everything is hooked up. went out that night and it was boosting as if nothing was wrong. the next morning i checked the fins on the cold side and it felt ok. now when i drive the car and boost, the stock gauge goes up to 14. and the car sputters.

what problems am i having, the car is completly stock. and normally would only boost 8 pounds.

any idesa would be great. thanks all

Did you hook up the vaccum line that goes to the wastegate...

You can check the flapper by unhooking the rod that goes to it and opening and closing the flapper by hand. Do not attempt while car is hot. You should hear the flapper open and close (by the flapper hitting the housing).

could this all be due to the turbo going out. when i hand spin the turbo it only spins when i make it. it wont spin when i try to spin it fast on its own. and while hand spinning it, it semi smooth until certain points

It should coast a least a little on its own. Do you know how many miles is on the turbo?

If the bearings in the turbo are going out, you certainly would be seeing a spike in boost from 8 to 14 lbs. Your problem is with your wastegate not opening when it should and building more boost than it used to. I still think its a problem with the vacuum line hooked to the wastegate actuator. Maybe you have a hole in the vacuum line? Buy some new line at Autozone, Checker, Kragens, O'Reilly's, etc. and try that. Vacuum line is cheap.

So you don't have a real boost gauge? It sounds like you think the stock gauge means something, well it doesn't. The ECU drives the gauge, and there is no map sensor telling the ECU what the boost is. Just looking at the tiny gauge with no numbers between 7 & 14 should tell you it's not at all accurate and is just a toy, just there to say "Hey, I'm a turbocharged car".

Get or even borrow a real boost gauge, then come back here with some real numbers to go by. If you have a bad boost leak you could actually not be running hardly any boost and the 'boost gauge' could be pegged.

Also, stock boost is more than 8 psi. I would say a stock 1G probably runs 11-12 psi or so. Wastegate pressure is about 7 or so, but the BCS (boost control solenoid) raises it a few psi unless you're running crappy gas or something.

Good point about the stock gauge. I forgot about that. You do need an aftermarket boost gauge to see real boost numbers.

attention all. i do have an aftermarket boost gauge, sorry i forgot to mention it. but the aftermarket one would read dead on 8 when everything is fine. now it goes to maybe 5 and starts acting up.

the vacume line is perfect.

if the bearings were going out wouldnt it start to burn oil threw the turbo and see blue smoke when i get on it?

so could this all be just the wastegate going out. like i stated earlier, when the car does boost it make a high whinning noise. (hard to explain but).. when it boosts now it like holds back, its not spitting, missing, but something is tuggin it back

also is there someone in the spokane washington area that would be willing to come take a look at it? thanks

bump! someone help, anyone around the spokane washington reagion that could take a quick look?
