opinion thread: redline vs. royal purple

Their products looks the same, their prices look nearly the same, hell even their websites look the same. If you had to choose between redline or royal purple for coolant additives, gear oil, grease, power steering fluid, and most importantly motor oil; who would you choose and why?

brand loyalty would probably determine your choice.

like a lot of things that have to do with choosing mods (obviously not the important parts; i.e., a VRS 3" exhaust versus a Greddy EVO, etc.).. you'll probably never notice going from one vendor to anyother. both are very good at what they do.

I used to use Amsoil but it got too expensive, then I tried redline and wasn't very impressed. I'm running sytec right now and thinking about trying royal purple next.

I used Royal Purple a few times and liked it. I was a little suprised that the oil actually was indeed PURPLE. I haven't lately because I've been lazy. As soon as summer rolls around and I can do my own oil changes, I'll probably go back to RP.

I've only ran Mobil 1 and Royal Purple oil in my car...didn't notice any difference.

I actually noticed a difference going from regular 10w 30 Valvoline to 10w 30 Royal Purple and it wasn't on the good side. I dropped about 10psi of oil pressure all the way across the rpm range and hardly any at idle. With regular 10w 30 I had about 12psi at idle. Kind of scared me for a bit since I just got 2500 miles on my new motor. Going to switch to Mobil 1 this next oil change. Never really beed impressed with Redline and Royal Purple's engine oil. Big fan of there transmission and gear lubes though.

i use royal purple in mine and my fiance's car simply because it is a quality synthetic oil and more importantly (for me), i don't have to change the oil every 3k miles! rp recommends changing the oil at something like 10k miles when used with an appropriate filter, (i use k+n, which is good for 10k). with this combo, i change my oil every 6k miles. great oil and it doesn't cost a dime more than other, cheaper, oils.

on a side note, i have read that most synthetic oils are good for about 10k miles, but most filters are not capable of providing adequate filtering efficiency over 3k miles. (before telling me how dumb this is, know that it was in a super street article a while back and was stated by the president of rp.....and i still have the article).

I think I read that too...something about RP being able to protect like 400x what the average syn oil protects.... and it wasnt the RP president, it was something that the national institute of materials or something like that...Ill look for the article and scan it if I can find the article again.

I use Royal Purple in both of my cars and it seems to do really well. Lifters sound alot better then when I used Mobile 1. Royal Purple seems to be doing well in my Head/Cam 99 Trans AM and both the 90 tsi awd.

Actually, this thread reminds me of a dilemma I'm going through. Not to thread-jack or anything, but since I won't be driving my car much this winter, I don't know whether or not I should get the oil change that I need right now or let the oil break down over winter and change it in spring. I don't want to spend $40 on an oil change just to let my car sit for three months, but I don't want to put in some cheap oil either. I'll probably end up getting the change anyway.

change it. I always spend the extra $$$ just to have peace of mind.

besides, i'm in the same exact situation with you and I just put fresh mobile 1 syn in for the winter. Just remember to fire her up and drive her around every couple days

I think I would drain it and leave it with no oil and put something on the ignition reminding you to put some oil in before starting.

Royal Purple has it online for me.

The claim that royal purple's film strength is 400% stronger than other synthetic oils and mineral based oils is backed by the American Society for Testing and Materials...

We've done oil thread after oil thread. It doesn't matter. If you're the sort who throws away good oil at 3,000 miles, it especially doesn't matter.
Buy what you like. It's the best oil you can get.
