ok. so ive got my car all back together and am ready to start it. only problem is gas thats in it is about 4 years old. i just got motor together tonite so i havent checked much with it yet. gas gauge says half tank but i dont remember if it even work. i did stick a 3ft zip tie done the gas tube but didnt get anything on it. what do yall think i should do with gas tank? i know i have to drain it but do u think i need to pull the tank? might be varnish now.

drain plug... get as much of it out as you can... then fill with 93...maybe something extra cough* xylene cough*

sweet didnt know they had a drain plug on them. that will be much easier. i googled xylene. what is it for? does it help clean tank. and how much do i need for lets say 5 gallons gas. dont want to fill it yet dont even know if it will run. also what about fuel in lines?

Mine sat for 5 years before I finally restarted it. I had to change the fuel pump anyway so I drained all the old crappy gas, dropped the tank, flushed out all the old remaining gas and sediment and let it sit out to dry for a few days before putting it back in. The drain plug is on the drivers side (24mm bolt, i think). The one in the middle is what holds the fuel pump to the floor of the tank. If you drain from the one on the side, there will still be about 1/2 gallon or so in the tank so it may be worthwhile to drop it and clean it out real good.

I have a 96 gst didnt see a drain plug but instead i pulled up the back seat and removed the cover from the floor pan and fuel ga and rigged up a pond pump with a hose attached to it to suck it all out. alot easier than dropping the tank.

deff drain it
xylene is a paint thinner that ups your octane depends on how much you use. i use toulene personally its cheaper and easier to get in my area

"My car's been sitting about a year and I anticipate having it run in a few months. I know that I should drain the tank, but what do you do with all the old gas (about 3/4 tank....)?"

Well, check with your municipality or county. Up here in Jersey the counties all have their own hazardous waste drop off center. A lot of mechanics I know have been installing these power burners for heat in their shops that burn old waste oil and various other fluids. They usually only want a quart or two of gasoline as it changes the way all the other crap burns (supposedly clogs up the works of these burners or something). 3/4 tank is quite a bit of gas. It may take you a few trips to get rid of it.

ITS ALIVE!!! drained tank. gas really didnt look to bad. put new fuel in and let the pump shoot old gas out. hooked it up and its started on about fifth try. thanks for help.
