oil starved intake cam

You should not change the caps without having the cam bores align bored or align honed. This is no differnt than putting a main cap, or connecting rod cap on the wrong main journal, or rod. They are aligned by dowel pins in the 4G63 head and are machined in place to a specific deminsion while torqued to a given specification of clearence between the cam housing diameter and the cam journal diameter. They are also machined in a line so that all of the journals are in a straight line.

If the head came apart this way then, the cylinder head should have been removed and repaired properly, or replaced.

Do not over torque the cam bearing caps, as this will cause the assembled dimension of the cam housing diameter to decrease. Thereby reducing the oil clearence for proper lubrication.

Are you sure that the intake cam was being advanced 3 or 4 teeth? Usually when there is excessive fricton or bind the item in question has trouble keeping up (if you will) with the rest of the motor. In other words the intake cam (in this case) should have been retarded 3 or 4 teeth, since the drag on it was excessive enough to cause it to slip several teeth on the timing belt. If it was advanced then something must have caused it to spin faster than the rest of the motor.

good points, the reason it appered that the intake cam was advanced 2/3 teeth is becasue when i aligned all the timing markes crank, oil pump and exhaust cam. The timing marks on the intake cam was 2-3 teeth away from alignment with the exhaust cam in a clock wise rotation.

You hook it to the oil pressure sensor mounting hole, open the valve and it squirts pressurized oil through the system without the engine turning. When everything gets good and oiled, you remove it, replace the oil sensor, and then crank the beast.

A simpler way to do it, if the timing belt is off, is to spin the oil pump with a 14mm socket attached to a electric drill. For tons of fun try it with the valve cover off :thumb:
 
sounds stupid....but just bear with me....


when i bought my car, it had a blown turbo. I installed a new turbo and it died within 4 hours (RIP b16g). I had the car sent to a prof. DSM shop where they pulled apart my motor since i had asked them to change my headgasket. Turns out that the intake cam was bright blue, and my turbo had been starved due to the oil distrobution block in my head MISSING.

simply ~> maybe check ur distro block to see if it has been clogged in anyway?
 
where is the distro block located? i also went throught a few turbos fast, then found one of my cam journals worn a bit, not as bad as yours but i replaced the head, cams, and lifters. i think the cam caps are suspose to be torqued to 14lbs. i did mine to 17 lbs. do you guys think that 17 is too much? should i re do it to 14?
