Im doing a timing belt on my 2g right now and my oil sprocket looks odd.

The normal timing mark isnt aligned at TDC. But it looks like someone made their own little marks. The homemade marks line up with the timing marks. Is this something I should be concerned with?

Should I try and align the factory timing marks even though it was timed differently by someone else? They must have done this for a reason. Sorry for the bad pictures. Camera sucks. If you look closely you can see 3 dots in a row highlighted with red.

Just an FYI, if you do a balance shaft elimination, it doesn't matter anymore.

If that timing mark is suspect, the only way to be sure that the sprocket is correctly aligned for the balance shaft to be properly phased is to use the balance shaft plug on the firewall side of the engine and insert an 8mm shank screwdriver. If the screwdriver goes into the hole more than 2 inches, you're good. If it only goes in about an inch before it hits the weight on the balance shaft, you need to rotate the oil pump sprocket one revolution and try again.

I read on VFAQ an easy way to test it.

NOTE that there is an easier way to do this. Simply rotate the mark on the oil pump sprocket until it is pointing straight up, and let it go. If the sprocket rotates towards (counterclockwise) the timing mark on the engine, the oil pump sprocket is aligned correctly. If it rotates away (clockwise) from the mark, spin the sprocket a full turn and test again, and it should properly rotate towards the mark now. Now line the mark on the sprocket back up with the mark on the engine. This avoids having to remove the rear access bolt entirely.

I dont think this engine has the BSEK installed. It was completely stock when purchased, so its unlikely. Just odd how someone else marked the sprocket and those marks line up perfect with the timing marks

Look on the left side (exhaust side) of the front cover and look for bs pulleys or belt to determine if it has bsek or not.

Your camera doesn't suck. I can see the background pretty clearly. What you need to do is enable macro on the camera. The symbol looks like a flower. Press it and it'll focus on objects that are less than a foot away.

Well guys I've been searching around and can't seem to find the answer. Didn't want to start a new thread. Anyways just bought another 2g 2 days ago and was running really rough, owner thought it was because of the BC 272 cams it has. wouldn't stay running unless giving it gas. Well today after work i checked compression and it seems to be good. After that removed upper and lower timing cover to check the timing and this is what I found. The oil pump sprocket never lines up, even after 6 turns. Unfortunately balance shafts are still there so I know it needs to be aligned. Question is do i just remove the timing belt and turn the oil pump sprocket until it lines up? If you look closely at the top of the cam gears the mark on the intake gear isn't centered in the center of the 2 12's like the exhaust gear is, I think that's going to make a difference in the timing? Any input would be greatly appreciated

No. You do not just line the mark up. You have to make sure the rear balance shaft is in phase. The only proper way to do it now is to remove the inspection bolt on the block and follow factory procedures. Tbelt comes off no matter what.

Do you have any links which I can follow to set back in phase? The oil pump sprocket is 180 degrees off. When i look at the VFAQ, it says to insert a screwdriver in the hole of the back of the block. Only question is are there 2 balance shafts I need to phase or just 1? sorry i know it's a noob question I just never messed around with this. Thanks
