i have a friend with a 2g gst 96 which has been rebuilt from top to bottom recently (within 3 months). The motor was broken in properly to my knowledge but the motor was letting off white / whitish green smoke. We were told the turbo was was burning coolant. My friend drove the car putting 1000 plus miles on it and changing the oil at early intervals with no problems.. The other day the car started to over heat pretty quickly so we turned the car off and checked everything - low on coolant - added coolant and went home. Turned the car back on and a nice knocking sound came and became louder.. At that point we turned the car off and checked the oil -- no issues seen but i noticed some sludge on the valve cover area.. The next morning i drain the oil to find the oil dropping out in chunks very slowly.. Take off the valve cover and sludge all over.. I guess my question is can we clean this engine and repair the damage or is it swap time?? I know what a waste it was but some people just dont listen. Id like to help him fix it AGAIN or atleast getting it working for a trade in but im unsure how to go about this.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Sidenote- i saw an engine cleaning bottle that advertises that it can dissolve sludge has anyone tried that? thanks

Sadly within all likelihood at LEAST the Rod & Balance Shaft Bearings are "wiped out" - Might as well jerk it & rebuild entire Motor - Probably the Head Gasket has been leaking since the day it was "rebuilt".

Yep, the "chunky" oil blocked the passages and like mentioned at a minimum wiped out the bearings in the bottom end. :barf:
I would suggest yanking the motor, complete disassembly, hot tank the block, and check the tolerances on both the crank and rods.

thanks for the response my friend says its under warranty but well see if they repair it correctly this time.. IF not well ripp it apart and get it cleaned and redone - or swap.. Thanks for the help ..

Well if you're burning coolant and it sludged up because of that, you need to check the block for cracks. If your head gasket was all nice and pretty and you could tell it wasn't blown then a crack in the block is probably your culprit. If that's the case then the block is trash. Also, check to see if there's any oil in the coolant when you drain it. It will have a nice black to brown look and the oil will float on top of the coolant. One of the easiest things you can do is just do an oil flush on it. If after that is done and the motor is deemed in good shape, then fill her on back up with all the necessary fluids, but get some flourescent dye and add them to the appropriate fluids. (Oil dye will say it's for oil, coolant dye will say it's for coolant) (Make sure you get different colors too...) Once you have that done and you start it up, get a nice high power black light and check for the dye. It will show you where it's leaking from quite well. Like I said above though, you might have a crack in your block, and if that's the culprit then you just need to get a new one.

thanks for the response - head gasket is gone -- the block has no cracks and there were no metal shavings found ? Its in warranty hands now so ill let them deal with it..
