hey guys, just recently my oil light began to come on. When it first happened i let my car cool down overnight and checked the oil in the morning. My oil level is right where it should be but yet when my car just sits there and idles, the oil light comes on and will stay on but with even the slightest touch of the gas pedal, the light will go off until my idle comes back down to normal. I mean i can rev my car only 100 more RPM's than my normal idle should be and the light will go off until it comes back down to its normal idle. With this being said, i thought maybe my idle was too low and i had mechanic raise my idle just slightly higher to about 850-900 rpms and once again at idle the light still comes on. Now with the idle back to normal it is still doing it and i'm lost. Anyone know whats going on or is it just a bad oil light or oil pump?

ok thanks....im still a complete newbie...could you tell me where i could find what you are talking about....maybe even a picture would help out a lot...i'm just not even sure where to look for this....thanks

You probably need to change your oil pressure switch/sending unit. This happened to me when I first got my car; exact same symptoms. Before you go replacing it, make sure that the wire connector isn't falling off. The connector just slides onto a flat metal post and comes off fairly easily.

Pic of the area in question:

The sending unit is maybe 2" diameter, 2.5" long "can" with one black-insulated wire coming off the end. It is hanging off of the oil filter housing. The housing is on the driver's side of the motor. The sending unit "points" at an angle toward the street and toward the back of the car. Just find the oil filter, it screws into a large housing. The back side of that housing has one end of the sending unit threaded into it with the wire on the other end.

Take 10 seconds to crawl down and look. Not sure if you'd have to jack up the front-left corner or not to get a good look at it.

The wire comes off without any tools as I recall.
