I bought my car with an oil pressure gage in it.

I cant figure out why the gage is maxed out though... Right when I start it up it shoots all the way around and it pegged.

How can I fix this?

Try buying a new gauge. Go to autozone and pick one up for like $20.

Is it maxed out all the time, no matter what RPM?

I'd suspect a bad sending unit or bad wiring.

Okay ill try to tighten it first, then if that does not change it I will rewire, and last buy a new gage...

I dont get how the old owner wouldn't fix this. Drives me nuts and I've only had the car for a month.

Does it drop back down after warmup? Are the balance shafts eliminated? If so there's nothing wrong with the gauge, the previous owner didn't port the oil filter housing. That's your actual oil pressure.

If its pegged 24/7 then it's bad wiring or sending unit.

Is it an electronic gauge or is there an oil line running up from the sending unit? I used to have a cheapo from autozone that had the oil line running from the sending unit to the gauge, and it read the pressure very well, no jumping or anything. Now I have an electronic sending unit and it seems really jumpy and pegs sometimes. I've gone through my wiring countless times and haven't found anything wrong.

i am experiencing a similar situations except my gauge is pegged all the time. i have a Autometer cobalt oil pressure gauge that worked fine for 4 months then all of the sudden one day it read 60psi and never moved again??? i contacted autometer about the issue but before i send it back to them i want to see what other ppl have to say about the issue. the gauge is only 5-6 months old.

^ They aren't talking about the stock gauge.

Turn the key to ON but don't start the car. If the gauge jumps straight to max, then it's wiring/sender related. If it just goes to "0" then it's your actual oil pressure.
