i was looking a 93 auto for a buddy of mine, the guy "said" all it needed was a fuel pump but wont let me bring one. so i started to incept motor, i had the guy pull the plugs, they where black and fouled with oil... there was about a inch of oil up on the bottom of the spark plug socket. there also was oil pooling on top of the piston. i dont think a oil cap would cause that much oil... plus it was dry around the cap

true but #1 was more less dry and it had just about the same amount of oil as #4 which was worst, we cranked the motor with plugs out and didnt see any oil coming form the seals.

Sounds like a lot of oil for leaky spark plug well gaskets. Mine leak and only a little gets on the sockets. It mostly pools in the valve cover valley.

Tell him that if you can't try your fuel pump and do a compression and/or leak down test, it's not your buddy he's going to sell that lemon to.

Unless you're going to talk him way down and fix it. :thumb:

with oil in the cylinders it will give a false reading. he wanted 700 i offered him 350 because the car was worse shape than he said, and than windshield was badly spider cranked which he didnt mention. to fix every thing would be close to 600 bucks. i have everything to fix it :) minus the windshield

Well I mean, do the fuel pump thing and run it to see if he's being honest. Warm it up, then do the test(s). Before the oil reclaims the pistons. I'd just want to be sure the piston rings were in good condition and the PCV system was working, because that's the other cause for oil hanging out in that area, though not so much in the valley.

he wont let us do the fuel pump. so based on that there must be other stuff wrong

Sounds like a definite project car. You may get lucky and only have to replace the fuel pump, but if your buddy buys it, prepare to be waist-deep in motor work. At least he'll be prepared for any problems on down the road with that kind of experience.

Depending on the model, $300-400 doesn't sound bad. DL, ES, TSi...
