I have some sort of fluid leak on the ledge of the firewall on the backside of the motor. I cant tell what it is. It completely covers the ledge when i drive the car but when I'm not driving the car i cant see anything dripping or spraying. Checked motor oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid, and even coolant for the hell of it. All of these fluids are at there normal levels. I am assuming it is transmission fluid that is somehow leaking onto there. Could it possibly be spraying out of a drive axle and onto the ledge? Which would also explain why I dont see anything when the car is idling because the transmission is not in gear. Are there any area's I can check on the transmission for common leaks?

I guess a good question would be, what color is the fluid? Red, tan, green (or pink, or orange). . . ect.

One thought would be to check the TC fluid level. And check the cv's for rips.

Ok I'm 99% sure its motor oil. I think Kevin hit the nail on the head with not having a hole blocked on the back of the block. Does anyone have a pic of the backside of a 6bolt block? I looked back there and I can see 4 threaded holes with no bolts in them. I can't see anything dripping out, I think when the oil pressure increases its spraying out of one of the holes. I know i don't have bolts in the 2 holes for the brace that runs from the block to the intake manifold, and there are 2 or 3 other holes that don't have bolts in them either. Also does anyone know which bolt holes should have bolts in them??

Thanks Again,
-Brian

It could be the small hole that is used to set the rear balance shaft. That little plug can come out and it would spray a bit of oil.

There is only 1 hole that i can think of that would lose oil and if that bolt wasn't there, it would leak bad. It is over next to the rear engine mount. Did you check you knock sensor. Mine went bad and leaking down the back of the block, but it is really sticky fluid, nothing like oil.

I'll just throw this in here I have a leak ALL over the underside of my car reaching about halfway down the car. So what I'm trying to say is it could be coming from somewhere else and it just getting sprayed. Hoses, or leak on the back of the pan etc. anyways just my experience good luck.

I think I am missing this bolt because this is exaclty where the leak is, can you elaborate more on this? Pics? bolt thread size?

Thanks,

its near the middle of the back of the block, sits about 2 inches above the oil pan. there are a few threaded holes back there, so take a skinny screw driver and see which one goes all the way through. this is the only one you need to plug. i believe the bolt has a 14mm head on it.

If you search the balance shaft removal threads you will find it. I remember when I rebuilt my engine the machine shop must have took out this bolt, and not put it back. When I started my engine it made a mess. Best thing to do is like previously mentioned. Take a screw driver and see which hole goes into the block, it is right around that rear motor mount. Find it, grab your can of bolts that you have from the other things you have removed, and find on to fit it. If you don't have any try to find something close, and go to a parts store and pick up some.

I had this as well. I did it to myself when I installed my SMIM. The oil plug in the block was right nect to the manifold brace bolt (2g) for the intake manifold. I removed it on accident and developed a large oil leak. Crawled under there and found oil residue in the empty bolt hole so I found the bolt that I removed. All was fine after that.
