Today my oil filter unscrewed itself once again. But this time I lost all oil pressure and blew oil all over the place from the oil filter location. Apon removal of the filter the screw that the oil filter screws into also came off. And was extreamly loose. This seemed to be the cause of the problem. I screwed it back in with my hand and put on a new oil filter off a EVO 8 and the filter is the same exact size and everything. After that it just drips a bit not leaking like it was. Is there a gasket in there or does it just need to be tightened with a tool?

Thanks,
Josh

Your problem is a semi common one. Search around there are threads on it. You don't want to overtighten the stud or the filter. I don't believe there is a gasket or needs to be one (someone else?) for the bolt/stud/screw, but the filter should have a ring on it to seal it to the housing.

Tightened it down semi hard and it still leaks didn't see any gasket of anysort.

Thanks,
Josh

Loctite that sucker. I've noticed this problem mentioned several times. In fact, I just lost a motor to this problem, as my gf (who was taking my car on a trip) didn't notice the falling pressure on the dash gauge and proceeded to run it completely out of oil and seized the engine up. The stud holding the filter and oil cooler nut had backed itself loose and pumped the engine dry.

The most definitive solution mentioned in the threads was to pull the oil filter mounting stud off, clean it with brake cleaner, clean the nut with cleaner and reassemble with loctite (can't remember if they said blue or red). Do it right once or do it over and over and over, ad infinitum.

also, if you tighten the nut holding the oil cooler on too tight, it tends to crush the cooler which mixes your oil and coolant. read here: http://vfaq.com/mods/oilcool.html

Interesting. I screwed the screw back in and it still drip leaks but not near as bad. Will try the locktite method next.

Thanks,
Josh

Red is high strength, blue is moderate, purple is pansy. So I'd go RED!

there's also an o-ring seal on the back side of the oil cooler (between the cooler and the oil block) that can go bad. it's similar to the rubber seal on the oil filter. that may have dried out and cracked or ruptured. may as well check it out.

Well here is the word.

I just pulled in to RI all the way from NC. Took about 24 hours due to stoping alot there was 4 cars total in our group heading up here to new england we traveled with radar detectors and 2 ways the whole way which allowed passage through VA at about 110 miles an hour.

Well durning the trip I went through at least 15 quarts of oil using the oil pressure gauge to figure out where im at. It seems to still be slow leaking from that screw. I reasembled it with out the locktite didn't see the post till after. But it still drip leaks from off the cooler. I can't tell if its coming from the filter area or the cooler itself. I made it here to RI with out to many problems just came close to running out of oil a few times.

Any ideas?

I noticed the post about the o-ring on the cooler I noticed a o-ring filter type fall out of the opposite side of the oil filter. But thought nothing of it thinking it had to do with an old filter. Im going to check this out today.

Thanks,
Josh
