i have a 90 6 bolt block and front cover assembly and im wondering about the oil cooler. my old engine (95) had metal shavings all in the oil pan, so there are probibly going to be shaving in the oil cooler as well. im wondering if i can just clean it out and hope that it gets it clean enough so it wont screw anything up, and can it just bolt right up to the 90 pump assembly? or do i have to get an external oil cooler for the 90 block? or is it possible to run it without an oil cooler? thanks.

from personal experience i would not re-use any part that had metal shavings from an old motor...especially things like an oil cooler, or turbo where its hard or impossible to visually see that youve removed all debree.some people will probably say just clean it, but i dont think its worth ruining another motor, turbo, etc..as for the fitment, im not sure if it will fit directly onto your cooler, but since id recoment getting a new one anyway why not just get the stock one from another 90??? you know that will fit, and im pretty sure youll be able to fit it in the stock location. as for running it without the cooler at all, i wouldnt recomend it, sure you can but why take away something beneficial when you dont have to? so i guess the easiest answer to all your questions is remove the old dirty oil cooler, get a new one from a 90 that you know will bolt right up to the housing and call it a day. im sure there are other options, but i think this is your cheapest, easiest solution. :rocks:

Flow goes from the pump to the cooler to the filter. Any crud will be harmlessly cleaned out. I there's enough in there to matter to the filter, the pump won't be able to get oil through it.

yeah 90's have an external cooler, i should have mentioned that being a have a 90 i assume everything 90 is common, my fault. i just went through a rebuild where the guy who machined my head didnt clean it properly and i didnt find out untill i ran oil through it and found what looked like a oil pan full of glitter,so then i had to take the whole damn thing apart again to clean it.. so call me a little peronoid haha, im probably a little more cautious that need be. but ive never seen a motor go bad due to someone being to careful...id still use an EXTERNAL 90 cooler, hell it cools better, should fit under the bumber with no problems ( might be hard if/when you get a front mount) and you can be sure its clean, but like defient says youll probably be fine with the one you got..im just givin you another option..see all those green squares by his name?? he knows his sh*t so if he tells you something follow his words with confidence he wont steer you wrong. :thumb:
