I'm not new to these cars, I just haven't had one in awhile. I just got a 94 AWD Tsi and have been doing some repairs and maintenance that it was lacking.
The car is pretty much all stock.
So here is the problem - it has a really bad intermittent hesitation.
Here are the symptoms:
The car will be driving fine, but then it will feel like there is no power, almost like it is going up a steep hill. The boost will max out and you can here the car struggling to keep speed. You can push the throttle to the floor and get nothing but a whole lot of rushing air sounds. Let off and the BOV releases a bunch of air and the car jerks forward like you hit the rev limiter. There seems to be no cure except to wait it out and it finally gets over it after 10-20sec.
This can happen in any gear, at any time, but seems to happen more as the car is warming up, just before hitting full operating temp. It mostly happens around town when just cruising along or taking off from a stop like normal.
I have also noticed that if you hold the throttle down when it happens, the revs will climb slowly (again like going up a steep grade) and then when it gets in the higher rpms (above 4000) it will start to sputter and jerk and backfire as it tries to accelerate.
It also seems to use a lot more gas for everyday driving and it is almost always in boost. It is hard to just drive normal and not have the car boosting just to maintain speed on a flat stretch of road.
I did a boost leak test and fixed all the leaks but it still does it, in fact almost more often now. I checked the plug wires and plugs and they are all good. I haven't checked the coil pack but since it is an intermittent problem, I'm not sure how to recreate it.

What do you guys think?
